When will the holiday season end?

December 12th, 2007

So I’m at home today with a stomach thing.

Am I the only one who gets resentful when they take a sick day during the holiday season because they’re actually sick?

I woke up this morning with such a gut ache (yeah, I know, I’m a classy guy) and then waited around till about 8 a.m. just to see if it would pass. When it didn’t, I e-mailed everyone at work to tell them I was ill, and that I was going back to bed.

When I woke up two hours later, I thought “Oh my God, I have a day off, I can get some things done!” Fat chance. I continued to feel awful through my tea, toast and shower, and then hauled myself over to the post office to pick up a couple of packages. The post office is two blocks away. By the time I was on the backswing, all sweaty and draggy and laden down with boxes, I felt like I was on the Great Wall all over again.

So I’m back home and saying “Screw that!” to the rest of the day.

Knitting update: the feather and fan lapghan is creeping along at a steady pace (it was too big to take on the plane to China, or I would have gotten more done on it then); I did resurrect the fabled Slouch sweater for the China trip, and I got a respectable few rows done on it; and, last but not least, I have knitted/crocheted/sewn/jackhammered not one single gift, and I am refusing to feel guilty about it.

(This is supposed to be a gifts-for-kids-and-partners-only Christmas but we all know how far that goes.)

I’ve seen a few things where I thought “That’s cool, I could make that in an afternoon” (Thanks, Ravelry) but today is the first–and probably the last–afternoon before Christmas where such a thing would be possible. Ain’t happening.

Maybe I’ll squeeze out a few facecloths or a hat or something in my annual Knitting Emergency mode; I still have a few of those I haven’t finished from last year. Or maybe I’ll just keep knitting for myself this year, and hand them all gift cards. I think you can tell which direction I’m leaning towards.

Oh, as one of the items on my ever-growing list of gifts I’m giving myself, I received my Chumby a few days ago and I’m enjoying it immensely. That’s it at the top of this post. I know many of you have no idea what a Chumby is or what it does and that’s fine. I’ll write more about it a little later, but for now you can check it out here.

Sorry to hear about your gut problem. As a teacher, I know there are certain illnesses you can cope with at work, such as a basic cough or sniffle. But if a fever develops, that’s a day off. However, anything to do with stomach, you just can’t ignore. It has the potential to become an explosive situation, if you know what I mean. No choice there but to stay home (and near the bathroom.) I hope you’re feeling better soon.

Hope you’re feeling better! Do you ever get people freaked out at knitting on a plane? I almost always use circulars in my cargo-class seat, since they’re less threatening. I prefer bamboo, as well, but invariably someone gets really nervous when the needles come out.
