Comments - Time to add features?
Posted by Andrew Faulkner on October 1st, 2006.
We’re a listening community. We’re also a talkative community. So I thought I’d ask for some feedback about the comments. I’m looking for any feedback you have (any irks or issues with current commenting system) but here’s a list of what I’m pondering:
- Adding CoCommment functionality.
- Adding a notification of new comments via email facility. (Catchy!)
- Ability to style comments more easily.
Any thoughts are most welcome by commenting here or giving your opinion privately via our feedback page. Thank you, readers.

Andrew, I always appreciate sites that allow me to sign up for notification of comments by email on particular threads.
I find that the options to use blockquote and a tags give me more than enough markup options. A preview button might be nice to make sure mark-up tags have been closed properly.
Also, have you considered threaded/nested replies (e.g., as used on the Agonist)? I’m seeing comments handled this way on enough of the high-traffic political blogs that I expect we’ll see it as an option offered by standard blog software soon. (Soon = 6-12 mo?) Threaded comments make it much easier for readers to follow different threads in an active discussion around a blog post, and much easier to writers to indicate they are writing a comment in reply to a specific, previous comment.
(I’m a regular reader who mostly lurks here — and I enjoy your site greatly. Thank you.)
A preview feature would be nice. I had a problem with my first post here because I didn’t realize that certain characters and formatting would be stripped out. (I was putting in a bit of sample code that it didn’t like).
Shaula,
A great response - this has given me a lot to think about. And a ‘lurker’ hey? Well thanks for speaking up. Any more lurkers out there?
Megan,
A preview feature would be good. I agree. Lots of work to do now!
check spelling is always nice =)
the site seems to already be cocomments set, at least on my puter.
bigger comment box, or the ability to expand the box would be nice. I can give you some simple javascript code to do so, hit me up with an email if you want it
Andy, I would put the recent articles more up, For instance in the outer right hand column at the very top that is. ?? Just suggesting

Реально классное место, мне тут понравилось, правда…
Столько всего класного и позновательного, я тут останусь на долго.
There was this guy see.
He wasn’t very bright and he reached his adult life without ever having learned “the facts”.
Somehow, it gets to be his wedding day.
While he is walking down the isle, his father tugs his sleeve and says,
“Son, when you get to the hotel room…Call me”
Hours later he gets to the hotel room with his beautiful blushing bride and he calls his father,
“Dad, we are the hotel, what do I do?”
“O.K. Son, listen up, take off your clothes and get in the bed, then she should take off her clothes and get in the bed, if not help her. Then either way, ah, call me”
A few moments later…
“Dad we took off our clothes and we are in the bed, what do I do?”
O.K. Son, listen up. Move real close to her and she should move real close to you, and then… Ah, call me.”
A few moments later…
“DAD! WE TOOK OFF OUR CLOTHES, GOT IN THE BED AND MOVED REAL CLOSE, WHAT DO I DO???”
“O.K. Son, Listen up, this is the most important part. Stick the long part of your body into the place where she goes to the bathroom.”
A few moments later…
“Dad, I’ve got my foot in the toilet, what do I do?”
