Sunflower Sweetness

July 14, 2006 on 11:52 am | In General, Photography |

Sunflowers are not only grown for their beauty, their splendid tones and vibrancy, but are also grown for use as food and medicine. Archealogical studies have shown that Native Americans began cultivating the sunflower as far back as 2300 B.C.

The sunflower is used as an edible crop, and it is rich in nutrients, including Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which helps to keep our cholesterol/triglyceride levels low. The oil from it is invaluable in that respect. Its seeds are used for snacks, or as an addition to salads, vegetable dishes, salad dressings, etc.

Sunflowers are quite easy to grow, and all they need to flourish is good soil, direct sun, and watering. The thrive in the summer and fall seasons, and add a gorgeous touch to any garden. They make a wonderful background flower, due to their height, and also look good in rows against a fence.
