A Modern Prayer

Date: August 14, 2007

As I waited for my train at Richmond Station this morning, I noticed the inherent timidness, perhaps even shame, of the average person. On the platform across from me, hundreds of people stood, most of them looking downward at asphalt and concrete, attempting seemingly miserably to avoid eye contact and awkwardness. If I didn’t know better, it would have looked like hundreds had their heads ducked in silent prayer.

And perhaps they were praying. It’s a modern prayer, despite all the freedom many of us have been brought up with. The prayer is silent, wordless even to many of those praying it; this prayer that no unknown soul should see you for who and what you are. But some of us are always looking and perplexed by the extreme insecurities of man.

Do we really have so much to hide?
