Swank New Business Cards

Posted on Monday 21 January 2008

So this post serves two purposes.

First, it’s a self-congratulatory little note on what I think are some pretty swell looking business cards. My goals were to come up with a design that was memorable and fun, but that also encouraged people to visit our tasting room. The ticket concept seemed like it fulfilled both of them. Direct to consumer for the win.

Second, since we recently received initial approval from the USPTO for them, this post should hopefully qualify as initial commercial use for the marks “Flavor Country” and “You had me at pinot.”

Trademark issues are distinctly un-fun, as both Brick House winery and Beau at Basic Juice recently learned (Note: Link is down. Beau seems to have deleted the post.). Hopefully via the indexing power of Google, we’ll be spared any such nastiness in the future.

Please do let me know what you think of the cards in the comments, both good and bad. I can take it.

LOVE THE CARD. You just forgot to really feature people to come to your website as well my friend. I personally believe that people should really leverage their cards as well to promote website visitation in a way that is compelling (not just http://www.) Great job.

    Josh,

This is the best business card I have EVER seen. Brilliant idea and execution. I want one when we meet (I’ll have to raise my game, as a result).

    Cheers,

    Tim

“You had me at pinot” is a brilliant tagline - I salute you!

Now, where is the wine? :)

When I hear ‘flavor country’ I think tobacco, which most would feel is a negative association these days. I dig the rest of it though!

keep the numbering on the cards sequential, perhaps someday there can be a massive, winner present only raffle prize

Not only is this an ingenious, original and well-designed card, it’s interactive! It makes want to come explore your winery, curious as to whether the ticket will provide me entry to some secret pinot noir cellar! Nicely done.

Work those cards–they’re great. Are they normal size or a little longer? Just wondering if they’ll fit into business card holders.

While I love “You had me at Pinot,” like Rama, I’m a little slower to Flavor Country. But it could grow on me.

    Brian,

What a great idea. Would certainly cost more but the interactivity and reason to hold on tot he card would probably be worth it. Maybe next print run…

    Rama,

Yes, tobacco. I guess the Flavor Country mark is me falling into the trap of thinking my sense of humour will mesh with everyone elses. When I taste a great steak I say “Now that’s flavor country”. Might not be translating.

    Gabriella,

Thank you! That’s the dream response, really. Hopefully others feel similarly.

    Farley,

They are a little longer than normal. About the size of an actual ticket, so no they won’t fit into a card holder. While this has it’s plusses and minuses, I think to stand out it was a risk worth taking.

Thanks for the amazing feedback everyone!

I also think the ticket card is brilliant, Josh. But a “Generalissimo” in “Flavor Country” makes me think of a Clint Eastwood western (”A Fistful of Pinot”?)

    Nice work!

I dig the cards. Just enough of the “wtf is this ?” factor to keep people on message for a few extra seconds in today’s rush-rush world.

    Typo: You spelled ‘flavour’ wrong.
    Oh, wait a minute. . .
    You’re an American.
You’re allowed to spell it that way.

    Excellent card!

Doesn’t copyrighting suck. I just finished getting the copyright for “Bedrock.” One of those things that it is well worth the money to get a good lawyer and do it right from the start. Just like compliance work.

    @Morgan re: compliance

Aint that the truth. A lesson I had to learn the hard way, sadly.
