Sumire and Kojomaru continue to search for Kojomaru’s sword body. They find it at the base of Okikurumi. Sumire’s approach has awakened Aika and Shui, who had been absorbed by Okikurumi. Kojomaru is pissed as this development; he thinks Atsuma has enough to distract him without Shui suddenly reappearing. Meanwhile, as Atsuma fights Yanagi and Lord Hyde, he taps into a power deep within, that effects even Kojomaru, who’s far from the raging battle!
Shui’s back! And he even managed to save Aika, even though she still thinks of no one other than Sumire. Kojomaru is none too pleased with this new development; too bad he’s the one that brought Aika, and then Shui, back to consciousness. Their happy reunion is cut short by the soldiers at the research facility, and soon they’re all fleeing in separate directions. It seems as though Aika is finally on the verge of regaining her memories. Will she remain faithfully devoted to Sumire, or will she turn back to her childhood friend and protector, Shui?
Atsuma seems finally on the verge of finding something worth fighting for. When he was defeated by Utsuho, and he lay, dying, he saw Sumire, and was reminded of himself. Having lost everything, as she wept for the one thing she can’t ever have, he was compelled to reach out and try to soothe her. Sumire still thinks nobody else could ever know the pain of her rejected love, but Atsuma, too, was cruelly abandoned by Utsuho. They are two sides of the same coin, and they both experienced the devastation of Utsuho’s betrayal. To have the center of their universe, the light in their life, suddenly extinguished was indeed a bitter blow. Will they become stronger from the experience, or will they allow it to destroy them?
This volume also included a side story, Kamui School Edition, which was a humorous retelling of Atsuma’s first day at Noa Academy. It was an amusing chapter, but dang it, I would have preferred more pages devoted to the main story!
