Apparently, both the Westin and the Holiday Inn overbooked rooms for AX and bumped a bunch of rooms from the AX block to other hotels. Since I’m booked at the Westin, I am now sweating about how secure my reservation is! I called the hotel and was told that my reservation is still there, so hopefully nothing will change. I did book through Expedia, and not the AX Travelstore. Here are some threads from the AX forums describing the nightmare. Westin thread and Holiday Inn thread.
I understand that it’s common practice in the travel industry to overbook tickets and rooms, but for a convention of this size, and the experience Long Beach has had with it in the past, this seems a little negligent. I find it especially tacky that the hotels mailed out notices instead of calling people directly. Customer service is truly dead.

o.O. It’s a good thing that I live within a reasonable driving distance to AX.

This is really going to suck for a lot of people who are flying in from out of town and either didn’t, or more importantly, can’t, rent a car. I am skeptical that the hotels involved are going to be able to provide an acceptable shuttle solution.
