We’re introduced to Black Star and Tsubaki, who’re very similar to Maka and Soul Eater personality-wise (Black Star being the loud mouth and Tsubaki being more calm and calculating) except that Tsubaki is the weapon and Black Star is the Meister. Their latest mission to take down Al Capone ends in a failure due to Black Star wanting to work on his uber entrance which involves leaping out of the air ducts and announcing himself to the world in non-assassin-like fashion, which leads Al Capone’s metal-masked goons to go Tommy gun happy on Black Star and Tsubaki before they escape. Shinigami-sama isn’t pleased about Black Star’s performance, but he gives Black Star a second chance when he gives news about Al Capone going after a witch for power. Realizing that he could take down two birds with one stone to turn Tsubaki into a death scythe (Al Capone has about 100 goons, plus the witch’s soul), Black Star takes it upon himself to try the mission again.
Black Star and Tsubaki go to the witch’s house only to find red soul balls floating all over the place, courtesy of Mifune, the tall samurai-sword wielding protector of the witch. Both Black Star and Mifune duke it out, and Mifune comes out on top in round one due to Black Star’s inability to keep silent when trapping Mifune in a smoke screen while attacking from above, and Mifune strikes him down with the blunt end of his sword. Seeing how Mifune wasn’t taking the fight quite as seriously, Black Star all of a sudden gets serious and gets the best of Mifune by catching him off guard with Tsubaki posing as a Black Star copy. As Black Star goes for the finishing blow, out comes Angela the witch, who happens to just be a kid, and Black Star couldn’t find it within himself to strike down a kid. However, he does collect up all the souls of Al Capone and his gang, so not all was lost :P
So I’m guessing at the Shinigami Weapon Meister University, you probably have a choice of whether you want to become a weapon or a Meister, and the choice isn’t due to family lineage or anything like that, because Black Star and Soul Eater have so many things in common in how they carry themselves. I was worried we wouldn’t see a Shinigami chopu, but Black Star saved the day by trying to get Shinigami-sama to accept his autograph as compensation for the failed attempt to get Al Capone. Maybe Maka and Soul Eater will cut a deal with Black Star to help them get their soul counts back up.

Tsubaki didn’t eat them though, they just gave them to Shinigami-sama because they weren’t his kills. Or at least that’s how I took it.
Black Star and Tsubacki are a really awesome pair, and so is Maka and Soul. I really can’t wait until Death the Kid appears though — the trio look even more interesting!
I think he donated the souls for the tax write-off. It’s probably good because I get the feeling that the 99+1 rule is really to get Weapons to level up. That is why there are silly rules that make you restart your count and keep you grinding.
If Tsubaki took those weaksauce souls and ate Angela’s soul it probably wouldn’t result in a very powerful Death Scythe.
I always like the Black Star autograph jokes, and your theory about majoring in Weaponry or Engineering is intriguing.
I’m starting to really like this series! It was kind of funny how the witches they want to fight keep turning out to not be what they expected. And I can’t wait to see episode 3, Death the Kid looks like he’ll be pretty entertaining too :).
p.s. Haha funny picture captions!
