Which MacbookPro To Get
Hey Glenn;
My Name is Andrew and I’m heading off to university in the next school
year. I need a computer with some real horsepower as I do hobby video
editing, sound editing, photo editing and I am a serious gamer. I
looked at the Macbook Pro 15″ as it is the most viable option as it is
portable and powerful, aside from a vista based machine (which i want
to shy away from due to bad reputation). I am a long term windows user
and I look to use Windows XP on my Macbook through boot camp.
Considering my demand for an all round high performance machine which
of the current two Macbook Pro’s do you recommend?
P.S. Your previous post on the former generation Macbook Pro’s was
very help full.
Seriously, why ask a 16 year old what computer to buy when you are the one going to uni? How would Glenn know what you’ll need in uni? He’s in high school.
New theme looks like a cross between myspace & blogger. Fugly.
@ Andrew any of the macbook Pros should be sufficient for your needs. Even the cheapest one will breeze through what you described. If you have the money for the mid range I would go for it as it will be worth it in the long run.
@ Yan Chu … Grow up.
And finally @ Glenn nice update. As an artist I’m partial on your design/layout (kinda cluttered but fresh is good). and the ad under the article is very tacky.
I like the new theme. The only thing I can complain about though is the black bar at the top. Why’s it fixed? It just wastes screen estates and irritates the **** out of me.
I’m entitled to my opinion just as you are. Just pointing out to Andrew that Glenn can hardly be considered an expert on university computing. First rule, figure out if you have any course requirements for computing… then worry about gaming performance. It is Andrew who should grow up.
Since I don’t need it for course requirements and I am looking for a computer that fits my needs I think it is entirely justified to ask Glenn as a result of his previous videos recommending computers, speakers and other programs to people. Furthermore as being a longtime windows user I am not very knowledgeable to the performance of a Mac OS vs. the power hungry Windows, and Solaris I use at home.
In conclusion it is both entirely warranted to benefit from the knowledge of others and their experience with a different product then one is used to. That is why I would like to thank MJ for defending my appeal for some help in an area I am not knowledgeable about. Maybe if you went so ignorant and arrogant to others who wish for help. By taking cheep shots at others on a blog then you might learn something and accomplish something other then a low-level education and a mediocre job at least I’m going to university and will get a real job.
PS. Thanks Again MJ For The Help, I Just Wish Others Were Not So Self Centered.
Glenn, what is with all the ads? Sorry, this looks like a cross between blogger and myspace. BLECH! Your old theme was smooth and clean… this one is cluttered, confusing and has no taste. Go back to reading subtraction.com and look for simple.
And anyone who has trouble deciding what computer to buy should really do some research on their own! Pretty lame to post an irrelevant question in a comment about being a ‘hard core gamer wanting a mac laptop’ and then seem annoyed by others commenting about it.
I am in university in Hong Kong and study engineering. I am currently on exchange in Toronto (Canada). I am neither ignorant nor arrogant. I just think that you need to learn to do some research for yourself. You are, after all, smart enough to get into university.
What software do you use for your hobby video/sound editing? Are you prepared to pay $$$ to convert all your software to a mac?
So what sort of ‘hard-core games’ do you hope to play with this new macbook pro of yours? What are the game specs? Does the macbook pro meet them?
Check again with your university department. Many have suggestions for which computer you should buy. In engineering, most recommend something capable of running student versions Word, Excel, MATLAB, Mathematica. My university also has an online assignment submission system that only works with IE 7. Also, our library requires IE 6/7 or Firefox (Safari does not work).
“I feel so fucking helpless. Readers want new content every day, but they don’t want ads, and it goes on and on. People, work/life balance”
You seem to be finding yourself a life offline which IMHO is great! Blogging/writing comes and goes for most people and, being a personal medium, you really do need to be in the mood to blog. Forcing it will probably annoy you as much as your readers. Why not go back to posting a photo a week and see if you can re-kindle some inspiration for the medium.
With regards to ads, I understand they are required to pay for hosting bills etc, but personal blogs are usually hard to generate real income with. I imagine it was relatively easy to sell ads when you were a novelty (i.e. a 14 year old from NZ who digs Apple gear) compared to a regular teen with a tech/personal blog. You might want to consider text-based ads as they are far less intrusive than the animated ones you are currently running.
Hardcore games I currently play on my computer include the full valve lineup in steam, Crisis, Stalker, Stranglehold, Bioshock, Flight Simulator X, World In Conflict, Doom 3, Call of Duty 4, and Battlefield 2142. The Macbook mostly fits these in its configuration. I am just wary as my current Alienware Area 51ALX box plays these nicely getting 70fps in Crisis.
For converting software that I use for hobby video/sound/photo editing the cost is immaterial as my father works for Adobe Corporate here in Silicon Valley and I have a vast availability to the programs I enjoy for no cost as there are persons willing to allow me to trade my current Adobe CS3 Master Collection for a Mac based version. Currently if you must be a wear of my most used programs I use Premier Pro CS3 (for video), Photoshop CS3 (obviously for photos), and I use a dated version of Adobe Audition 3.0 or on other days I attempt to work with Sound booth. I will use Adobe Audition 3.0 in Windows as I will install Windows on the Macbook.
So I hear the iPhone will only be avaliable on a on account plan here in NZ… That sucks, I hate vodafones plans, I prefer paying for what I use rather than for more than I need. Will there be away to get around this and make it avaliable on a prepay account?
Im thinking of purchasing a Mac Pro in the next 2-3 months, and i was wondering do you think apple will introduce a new Mac Pro or get rid of it anytime soon?..
This will be my 2nd mac, i have an imac 2.4GHz, 4GB Ram, 320GB HDD,ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB But i don’t find it powerful enough So i plan on spending $6,000 AU on a decent Pro so i can use it as a gaming computer / Work Computer :)
So eh Do u think Apple will be introducing a NEW Pro Anytime soon or completley getting rid of it ??????>>>>….. Send Me an email cuz i don’t like check ur site alot :)
I felt the same way when I heard about the iPhone in Canada. Then I saw Rogers’ rate plans. $60 a month for 150 minutes, 75 text messages, and 400MB of data?

Nice site change. A little confusing at first. But now I understand. Can’t wait till July 11th!

The 16GB iPhone 2.0 is only white if I recall and the 8GB is only black.
June 17th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Once it’s yours don’t forget to load up some free NZ-themed iPhone wallpapers and a ringtone :-)

Paul, 8GB is black only, 16GB is in either.

The New site looks good - except for the vista-esque bar at the top. We’ll be second in Melbourne!

Welcome back Glenn, its about time. Anyway, nice theme but I still like the previous one better.
Yes iPhone 3G is coming to New Zealand. I will order mine from QATAR as I live in Dubai.
One question, are you gonna vanish again for a month or can we expect some nice stuff from you?
June 18th, 2008 at 4:24 am
Nice new theme, I really want 3G iPhone but the £30 contract is just to much for me.
June 18th, 2008 at 6:49 am
Don’t really see the point of this blog post. You could have even Twittered it with the length of it.
By the way, I prefer your old theme to the Chris Pirillo’s WicketPixie theme. It was more individual. This one’s popping up all over the web.

Fuck the NZ vodafone plans. $6000 over 2yrs for a fucking phone with only 1GB data per month. At least the news was good - john campbell ripped vodafone apart on live TV. Watch and Digg - http://digg.com/apple/Vodafone_NZ_Slaughtered_on_TV_about_Outrageous_iPhone_Plans
