cracking up, again
Why can't I find a comfortable pair of hiking boots that don't crack at the sides? I have wide feet, very high arches, and sciatica and I need comfy boots that keep my feet dry and not too hot. These Danners were the most comfortable boots I've ever had, but just like every other boot they end up failing at the bend of the foot.

I have the opposite problem. My feet are on the narrow side, so any boot I get tends to shift around a bit from side to side. Plus the seams eventually come loose.

I do fieldwork, too, and have bad luck with that type of piecemeal boot. They always fall apart at the seams. I had to get a new pair this spring, and invested in Asolo full grain leather. Full grain leather seems to hold up better and this pair is super comfy. I tried on another brand that was instantly painful, though. Good footwear is so important... but buyer beware, I guess.

Leather is way too hot (and pretty heavy) for me when I'm banding. And generally, takes too long to break in. I am suspicious that even a leather boot will then separate or leak where the uppers meet the sole.
Where the uppers meet the sole. Sounds like a song title...

Asolo boots are great if you have narrow feet. I have a new pair of Vasque Wasatch GTX, and my toes have wiggle room for the first time. Breakin was fast and gentle. Durability remains to be seen, but they're very comfortable, and don't weigh much for leather boots.

When I find a brand I like, I immediately buy 2-3 more pairs and store them in the closet, knowing full well that the minute I find boots I like, that model will be discontinued. My current pair is just ok, but made considerably better with the addition of a set of supersoles!

Ugh. High Arches! I have such high arches, my feet practically look like a C.
I may have to check this kind out, even if they don't last. I'm always looking for something with a high arch.
