Conference-orama: Creative Freelancer Conference

Skellie

Do you live in Chicago?

Could you get there?

The Creative Freelancer Conference, slated for August 27-29, 2008 in Chicago and presented by HOW Magazine and Marketing-Mentor.com, is the first business conference for “creative solopreneurs,” serving graphic, web and interactive designers, photographers, copywriters, illustrators and anyone else who is committed to making a freelance life work.

A panel of creative-business experts, led by Ilise Benun and Peleg Top, will share best practices for pricing, marketing, building client relationships, crafting proposals and contracts, maintaining a work/life balance and other skills critical to freelance success.

All in all, it sounds like a great excuse to get out of the house, learn some things and network (read: booze) with other freelancers!

  1. Is anyone from FSW going to this? Maybe we should have a meetup of FSWers. Looks like a good conference.

  2. Hey all - I’m the closing speaker for the conference. Be sure to track me down if you do attend - it would be great to meet you in person. - J.

  3. I already registered and purchased my airline tickets (better get them now — the rates aren’t getting any cheaper…) This is actually the first design conference I will have attended, so I am really looking forward to it.

  4. Neil - Looking forward to seeing you in Chicago! - J.

  5. Me too. We have a lot of surprises up our sleeve to make it a memorable conference and we hope to see lots of FSWers there. In fact, one of the morning roundtables could be for FSW.

  6. Thanks Jeff and Illise, looking forward to it as well.

I am working toward going full-time with my freelance business, which has really taken off in the last two years. Through reading blogs such as Freelance Switch, and books, listening to podcasts, etc., I have corrected a lot of pricing mistakes I was making and adapted some successful strategies of landing new (and better) clients, but I still realize there is whole new level I want to take things and this conference looked like it would have a lot of valuable information to help achieve those goals.

In addition to the sessions, I think making contacts and being able to network with other freelancers can be a great benefit in and of itself.

  7. I live in Chicago and will likely be going, it sounds like it will be interesting.

I have to say though, for a conference that’s all about - and for - creative freelancers, the website is hideous.

  8. Looking forward to meeting you all in person! It’s going to be a memorable conference so don’t miss out! seats are booking up fast so try to get your registration in soon…. we got an amazing panel of speakers and people coming from all over the world.

  9. Does anyone know if they ever have something like this in Australia?

  10. Hello! I noticed your posting on the upcoming Freelancer conference, and we also are having an event that is free next Monday at 5:30pm for freelancers to network and show their work to potential employers, and for employers to attend and look for talent:

Join us for a freelancer extravaganza on July 21st! Ascend Training and the Chicago Area Adobe User group will enable freelancers and those looking for talent to come together and share their samples and upcoming projects. Ascend has served the Chicago creative community for 10 years, and The Chicago Area Adobe User Group is the longest-running user group in the area. Held at the Ascend Chicago facility at 410 S.
