Joining The Coolspotters Crew
Web August 27th, 2008
Three months ago by the way of TechCrunch, I stumbled on a one-of a kind celebrity website named Coolspotters.
Coolspotters isn’t your average celebrity site. For one, it’s not all about the latest (and often ridiculous) news posted on sites such as US Magazine and Pop Sugar - Coolspotters completely does away with the news, and focuses on products individual celebrities are using, cars they’re driving, places they’re visiting, pets they own, publications and movies they’ve been featured in, and more.
Effectively - Coolspotters is the only place you need to go to find out about your favorite celebrity. See Ryan Sheckler sporting a cool new pair of shades and want a pair of your own? Hit up the website, enter his name, and check out his profile for the products he’s using, wearing, and driving.
Would you rather search through a pile of magazines and a list of blogs to discover the latest stuff used by the coolest people, OR would you like to have all the information on the latest celebrity products and trends in one place. All searchable, and cross-referenced with some of your other favorite things - movies, TV, music, etc.

I signed up to the site and participated as an active user spotting celebrities and adding product profiles for a couple of months, before contacting Co-Founder Aaron LaBerge regarding intern positions within the company.
Yesterday was my first official day working part-time for the new startup company. I’m super excited to see how things turn out and see how the company progresses in the near future. We have some exciting deals lined up with a handful of large corporations which should give the company an even further push in the right direction.
Check out Coolspotters and sign-up yourself.
Update: I don’t quite understand the people who are saying things such as “don’t forget my tech audience here.” Coolspotters is a separate venture which has nothing to do with the direction of my blog. Just like some of you go out and work elsewhere along with writing a personal blog.
It’s possible to be excited about several things in life. I’m taking a step in a different direction with this internship (in terms of topic) - but it has nothing at all to do with this blog, two separate ventures guys.

Pathetic, Glenn. Who gives a flying F$$& what celebrities wear? Oh yeah, nine-year-old girls. I’m losing my respect for you.

Losing respect in me for the companies I’m working for? Your choice Chris, it’s up to you what you think, at least I’m trying to do something with my time rather than shooting down the hard work younger people are doing.

Eh, if you want to participate in this sort of stuff, then cool beans. But it all seems a little too materialistic to me. Must be a teen thing? :P
August 27th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
What is it you do for them exactly?
August 27th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Have fun with it. Not my bag, but if you enjoy it that’s cool I guess. My sentiments about it are kind of a mix between Chris and Reemixx.
Just don’t forget about your tech audience!

BTW, what I agree with Chris on is “who cares about what celebrities wear”, not that I’m losing any respect for you. It just seems kinda dumb is all. But hey, if you like it, go for it.

All I have to say is what Michael said…”don’t forget your tech audience”. Other than that, good luck with the project.
Just because someone works for a new media company that does not relate to something of their main hobby (ie. tech in this case) doesn’t make it horrible. I guess Glenn is doing what he needs to do to make money and get his foot in the door at some online companies. If he enjoys it, who are we to judge? People have different hobbies and interests.
Bottom line: Glad to see you posting, Glenn. Don’t forget your main audience. And most importantly, good luck with this project! :)

I’m sorry Glenn,
But I think you have been a bit “girly” in the past few weeks. You launched that teen website, and now you come to your main blog to tell us what the celebrities wears or use?? WTF!! WHO GIVES A CRAP??? I no longer respect you, in fact I have stopped the RSS subscriptions and stopped following you on various website. I’m sorry Glenn but if you are trying to have a change and you no longer want to post about technology, you should mentionate CLEARLY on the homepage.
Very best regards,
Gary V.

Glenn, I realize it’s a separate venture. I also realize that you don’t have the time for blogging that you used to. http://www.glennwolsey.com/2008/07/24/noted-updates/
Obviously you’re free to do whatever you want with your time, online and otherwise. When I say “don’t forget your tech audience”, it just means I would be disappointed to see you post even less than you have been lately with all of these new ventures that you are up to. It’s not that I don’t support your right to do whatever you want, it’s just that I and many others really like your tech related work and you’re really good at it. It’s what you got started with online and probably the main reason for your relevance online. Even if you are involved with other ventures, just don’t forget the main thing you’ve been known for online. Don’t stop being a geek :)

I think it’s a great opportunity, and a great step forward for you Glenn; Congratulations.
In any case, I don’t think it’s the prerogative of your audience to judge your choices. My hypothesis is that this is some people’s way of expressing that they miss your old content, and the frequency with which you were publishing it.
That being said, whether or not people agree with the subject of CoolSpotters, there’s not denying that it’s an interesting and innovative web 2.0 concept. I think people should try to be more supportive of someone pursuing their interests without judging the subject of those interests.
Best of luck, Glenn!

Glenn what have you done? You have forsaken your youtube site, and now your personal blog is very sparse. Get it together man!

Useful for those of us who do have an interest in fashion. There have been times I’ve seen a celebrity wear something and wonder where I could get it - not that I can really afford anything they wear :p I guess it doesn’t fit in with the targeted audience of your site, hence the ‘complaints’. Me thinks it’s a cool venture, and best of luck with it.

While I have to agree with reemixx that the coolspotter’s site is a bit too materialistic for me, I wish Glenn the best of luck in his new venture. It may not be something that I myself am interested in, but as Caitlyn stated it is giving him a chance to get his foot in the door with a new online company.
As for not forgetting his tech audience, are you all forgetting about Desktop Vibes??? One of the main reasons that he stated for starting DV was “the ability to write abut things I wouldn’t have normally done with the site attached to the GlennWolsey.com domain name. Moving to Desktop Vibes for technological content and leaving this weblog for personal based entries”.
I hope you get the most out of your internship Glenn, and best of luck :)

It’s interesting that when someone else (Mike Davidson, of mikeindustries.com) posts this several months back, people of a wider age spectrum give him a mix of positive comments.

That site disgusts me. It combines two downfalls of society today, an obsession with celebrities and materialism.

Yes it is strange Wes, I’d like the perceived view on me to change. I don’t feel it’d have been held against me in this way if I had taken a job at Starbucks, however working for another web company I feel lines have been crossed in the readers eyes who feel time should be spent blogging instead.
With my blog, I did pick my domain name carefully - using my name. I understand it has gone ‘off-topic’ as such, but as a personal blog I feel I can push those boundaries from time to time. I’ll talk on your words and try to get the original flow moving again.

Eh, dont stress it. If its your new venture go for it. You havent changed anything on your personal blog other then slightly plugging Coolspotters. But otherwise nothing has changed. Coolspotteres and your personal blog are separate and im sure you will keep it that say. To everyone else, if you dont like coolspotters then go visit it and let Glenn do what he likes. Isnt the internet all about freedom?

Hm.. dude.
I don’t know whether it’s you becoming a poser more and more or whether it’s really just you revealing your true personality.
One way or the other… the last posts were ridiculous compared to all the plans you wrote about so much half a year ago. I totally agree with Alex Ross here. First you praise really good products for well thought through reasons; now you begin to write about friends totally digging your new gadgets and celebrity sites.

Glenn what about the youtube. Your 2000 suscribers would a appreciate a 30 to 60 second clip telling us why you havnt made video’s and around what time you plan on starting again. even if you don’t plan on making anymore video’s then you could say that in a video and post it to let us know.
