Sing Along

Those who have ever suggested watching movies with me have quickly discovered one thing:

I HATE musicals.

Hate them. Why don't they just freaking speak?

I fell asleep when I was dragged to see Chicago. I listened to perhaps 5 minutes of Rent. Don't get me started on the "classics." I don't think I've ever watched any of them all the way through - except for Sound of Music and that's because I was the lighting director for my high school's production of it.

And then came along Joss Whedon. Yes, srsly. My other half and I did not discover the Buffy tv show until it was in the sixth season - and we watched most of it out of order to boot. As much as I found the Buffy show to be surprisingly smart, clever and funny - I didn't think I'd want to watch an episode which was essentially a musical.

That episode is now one of my favourite television moments of all time.

It's a measure of how busy and, frankly, self-absorbed I've been for the last several months that I did not really know about Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog until Wil Wheaton wouldn't stop tweeting about it. I vaguely remember hearing about it, but I of course, it was released after I broke my leg, had surgery and then it was actually released the week I was in New Mexico.

So I finally got around to looking at it. Holy crap. Hysterical, as I would expect of Joss. And somehow I had not heard Neil Patrick Harris sing before, so I was surprised at the strength of his voice. Just like Buffy's "Once More With Feeling," I love the music and the whole 42 minute production. Nathan Fillion rawks as always. (Nathan was the lunatic preacher at the end of the Buffy series - and even better as Mal in Firefly and Serenity. Damn Fox for cancelling that show. Still pisses me off.)

For those of you unfamiliar with the genius that is Joss, this is parody of superhero/supervillain-dom. It's clever and the questions of good and evil are far more complex (and yet not really) than just the label of hero and villain.

It's also a parody of the whole blogging/videoblogging thing. Keep that in mind when it starts ... you get to see Mr. Geeky SuperVillain blogging as if anyone cared. Quickly, of course, you'll find that you do care. ("You're kidding! what a crazy random happenstance!")

Well worth the time to watch it. Even if you're not on a super-high speed connection.

Oh. And the sound track is now available on iTunes - I guess Joss was surprised to find it had landed in the #2 spot on iTunes this morning. Me? I'm waiting for the hard CD and the DVD releases!!

Meanwhile ... I'm getting my Ph.D in Horribleness ....
