I think that simple has many different meanings and applications depending on your view. One word that I think describes and encompasses everyone’s version of Simple is Usability. In order to be simple, it must be easy for everyone to figure out and to use (if it is something that can be used) Color, form and function have nothing to do with it. It is all about Usability.

Simple isn’t stupid or slow. Simple is elegant and clean. Simple is not boastful. Simple stands quietly unassuming. Simple unveils herself like a rose, clean and beautiful on the outside, but as you delve deeper into she reveals herself for the beautiful and complex woman that she really is.

Simple can be defined in many different ways, depending on what it is describing. In this case, it is probably a website. On a “simple” website, you must not have so many elements and colors that overwhelm the user. For example, fonts shouldn’t be crazy or overdone. They should be simple, such as the one I am using to type this comment. :) Basically, “simple” means to define something minimally without adding so much detail and extra bits of everything.

Simple is elegance gained from sincerity rather than complex embellishment. Simple does not necessarily mean shallow but the ease for usage and understanding. It is usually an adjective describing something that is not greatly adorned but to capture the basics of a subject with modest approaches. There is beauty in simplicity for its fluidity and efficiency using the least components.

To me, simplicity means freedom from stress. Unnecessary complexity is wasted energy, and completely preventable- when we choose to focus on viewing and understanding our world in a simpler way, we are freed from immense pressure. Why is a free-floating soap bubble perfectly spherical? Because it is the most efficient and simple way to get things done. If a free-floating soap bubble was shaped like an ampersand (&)… well, that would be really cool for a while, but it wouldn’t be simple. Eventually people would get sick of it. Come on, admit it. You know you would.

When something is simple it’s made the best way without any frills so that it is user friendly, efficient, and held to some standard.

Simple doesn’t mean bland, it means elegantly minimilistic to the point that it gets the job done, does the job well, and does so with a no nonsense approach.

Simple design is more than just a simple frontend interface, it is simple code that doesn’t make the user search for what they’re looking for and doesn’t spend more time loading than it does being used, and it’s structure is clean and basic enough that it doesn’t break the user’s browser or cause their computer to stall.

And that’s about as simply put as possible.

Let’s avoid dictionary definitions and warped conceptions of simplicity.

In reality simple is conveying the intended idea(s) without added deviating distractions.

    Simple is fat free.

    Simple is low calories.

    Simple is an ideal.

    Simple is a fading necessity.
