• Melodie Beattie : Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity.... It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.

Week in the Life : Tuesday Photos + Words (and a workshop giveaway)

Just a note that Stacy Julian organized a really cool project encouraging everyone to give ourselves the gift of the present moment. This is precisely what we are doing with this week in the life journey. Check out her blog today.

1. Super happy Simon wake-up this morning. He came into our room around 2am. I stayed for a bit and then went to his bed (which happens to be a bit more comfortable because of a firmer mattress). He joined me at about 5:45am just before the alarm went off at 6am.

This week I am excited to give away a spot in Kolette Hall's Giving Well (In 2-hours or Less) online workshop at Big Picture Scrapbooking.

Kolette is one of my favorite people and happens to be having a baby right around the same time as me next year. She is a fabulous product designer and instructor who really keeps the emphasis on things being meaningful and coming from the heart.

Here's the basics of Giving Well:

Gift-giving is an art. From the gift tag and wrapping paper to what's inside the package, you are saying something when you give a gift. Back by popular demand, Kolette Hall has designed a fresh round of fabulous, manageable gift ideas for the holiday season and all year long. This class is literally packed with everything you need to give well for the holidays or any special event all year long - and Kolette has designed every idea you will see in this class!

Every other day, you will receive a new idea for "Giving Well (still in 2-hours or less!)." True to form, Kolette has also included her exclusive downloadable artwork to help you create the perfect gifts, holiday cards and gift tags. As those of you who joined us last year for Giving Well know, you will be amazed with what you get in just four weeks of class time.

You asked for it, so we're starting class a month earlier than last year to make sure you have plenty of time to get those projects done for the holidays! Whether you are mass producing one gift idea or choosing to craft a different gift for each person on your list, you'll get tons of ideas for creating personalized gifts in less than two hours. Come join Kolette as she guides you in your new art form: the art of Giving Well.

You can read all the details about this online workshop here. It runs October 9 through November 5th. While you are there you can also check out her year long workshop for 2009: A Life Well Crafted.

To be entered leave a comment below and let us know if you have started planning for the upcoming holiday season yet. Comment section will be closed at 5pm today (Wednesday) and the winner announced shortly after.

Wow- first comment! That's never happened before :D

I always start planning for the holidays in September as soon as my kids go back to school. Not because I'm that organised but because it's the easiet way to budget for all the present buying (we have a HUGE family). Only problem is if I'm not careful I put gifts away in 'safe places' and forget where they are until January :(

I have started to think about our christmas cards... got some ideas and I HOPE to get going on them this month! Too ambitious? maybe....

Good Morning Ali - this project is becoming so much fun - lots of different pictures perspectives of life. Really enjoying it.
Holiday plans are coming together for us, the oldest and her hubby are coming home for xmas this year and it looks like his family from the States will be all coming to our place. We are hoping that Brody will adjust with a houseful for over a week. We are excited.
Happy day
Nicky

I enjoy making gifts for friends and family and Wrapping them is one of my favorite things! This class sounds very cool!

Just love the holidays and really try to start focusing more this time of year. In the past I've had my shopping done by early Nov. How relaxing! Most of December is spent going to plays/shows/events with the family, and I can do that stress-free when I'm not worrying about gift-giving. Of course, we shall see what this year brings with the financial burdens for everyone.

I've started working on my Christmas list. This year I am really trying to stick to a budget--and will be trying to make it a "crafty Christmas." We'll see if I have any luck . . .

looks like a great day!
so cool that so many people are taking the extra step and capture their lives right now.

enjoy your wednesday!

I bought some wood blocks over the weekend to make a decoration with. I just need to set aside some time to do it now.

I have done more than start planning! I am about 90% done shopping for my kids and have a good start on some other gifts as well (including teachers, bus drivers, crossing guards!). I definitely like to pick gifts up when I see something and it strikes me as being "perfect" for someone on my list rather than combing the mall the week before Christmas in search of something to wrap up. I have several friends who are very jealous (and a little mad) that I have so much done already! I am figuring with so much of this part out of the way, I will have time to do a few decorative holiday projects for our house as well as make a few meaningful gifts for some special people. That is what I always seem to run out of time for. I hope this huge head start helps me enjoy a more stress free holiday season this year! We will see how it goes.

Kristin

This sounds just like what I need to get my gift giving started for the holiday season. While, I have starting thinking about some ideas, I have yet to actually get anything started.

I've already started buying gifts and looking into the cards I want to make. I would really love to have a homemade Christmas, just don't think I could get my teenagers (21,18 & 16) on board. But maybe with friends and family. I love sentimental gifts!

I have already made my Christmas cards and I am working on my gift list. I want to give meaningful, thoughtful gifts. Have already selected some gifts from the world vision catalog!

I am definitely going with homemade gifts this year. We are keeping the holidays low key this year. I would love to take this class to help me get started!

Hey Ali :) I'm enjoying participating and watching the week in the life entries - what a meaningful project! As for planning for the holidays...I do tend to buy gifts here and there ahead of time and might have a couple in the closet. The only other thing I've done is look for plane tickets to visit my family over the holidays. Thanks for the chance to win a spot in Kolette's class :)

I have started! I keep a "master list" in my computer that I can tweek & edit as needed. . everything from my christmas card addresses (I even have some of my cards!)
to sizes. . they're put into a folder w/ holiday recipes, traditions, etc. . ironically, I'd like to "scrapbook" or journal it to make it a "family holiday book" that can be passed down.
LOVE LOVE LOVE homemade gifts & it's so true though. . even the most simple gift is quite special if "given well". . it's in the details.

I haven't made up my mind about the holiday season yet. Oh wait, I do have a little bit: my 3-year-old claimed that he's in need for a "children's violin" yesterday. Told him we have to wait for Christmas, since his birthday was on September 26th. I checked out ebay to get an idea how much such an artifact costs. Oh my, Christmas is here faster than you think!

Have not started...except 50 gift baskets from The Dollar Tree...a family tradition is to make goodies to put in the baskets for everyone we work with, we hand them out the Monday after Thanksgiving. :-)

Wendy

With a new baby coming the second week of February....I'm feeling a little overwhelmed about the holidays and "getting it all done" this year. This class sounds awesome! Jamie

I have lots of ideas running through my head but unfortunately have not begun executing. (Need to get going soon!) I love the entire fall/winter season!! Thanks for the info on the Giving Well class. This sounds like something I would love to participate in! Loving your "week in the life" project too. Thanks for all the inspiration. Have a wonderful day Ali!

I have started gift lists at Amazon to keep track of the gift ideas I have all year long, then I can go and look through them and pick the best for birthdays and Christmas. I already have half of my list done!

Yes I have!! I have my whole house decorated for Halloween right now! Just love all the pumpkins & mums!! Starting to figure out how I want my tree! This year I want to have one tree with hand made ornaments. I love decorating with lights and greenery! Started to make my cookie list!! Love the house when it smells like fresh baked goodies!!
So much fun!

I started with a list and a budget... and surfing on the web getting ideas. I would love a spot in Kolette's class!

I have trouble planning for the holidays until the leaves fall. Autumn is my favorite time of year, so I don't want to miss a second. I would love to win a class.

Hi Ali- Such good timing! I "officially" started my Christmas shopping yesterday! I would love more ideas for handmade, meaningful gifts for family and friends. With all that is going on in the economy I think it would be good for us all to get back to the basics and focus on what really matters - people. I, for one, would like to see more of a focus on giving versus consuming. Thanks and have a great day!

this sounds fabulous! i am kicking around some of my homemade gift ideas, for b'days and the holidays and I know one gift santa is buying for sure: a Nintendo DS for my youngest.

I am excited about this! I wanted to take it, but I am also taking Cathy's BPS class, and they weren't both in the budget.

Hi Ali! I'm using Photoshop Elements to make a family recipe book, 18 favorites, to give to family. I'm also making little 2009 calendars as gifts. I'm still looking for ideas for the men!

Hi Ali,
I have NOT really started getting ready for Christmas, or the holidays (thinking about it). I DID buy some Halloween pencils for the goodie bags I put together for my students. Not the candy yet though.

I'm just happy that I am keeping up with the kids school work! I have gotten Halloween costumes, but for Christmas its too far away for me to even think about it!

I haven't started yet. I am trying to decide whether to make the gifts or just procrastinate & do everything last minute. Okay, just kidding...(maybe!!)

I haven't started just yet, but so funny because I was thinking about it just this morning. Simple Mom has an article about it on her blog today that got my juices flowing. And I am planning on taking the other Christmas planning class over at BPS.

I've started to buy some presents here and there and am dreaming of snow, hot chocolate, scarfs, and christmas music!! :) Thank you!

I have started to plan for Thanksgiving. Making a list of grocery items & the craft project for the place name settings. Once this is well under way I'll start thinking about Christmas.

Usually, once October begins I somehow seem to remember how busy this season is for our family. Then I frantically begin making plans and lists. Every year I vow that I am going to make plans earlier and every year I don't. Somehow though, our holidays are always wonderful!!

As a custom holiday card designer, I have to get my Santa hat on in April and wear it straight through till Christmas. (After 16 years, I've pretty much adjusted to that.) I have been reading Kolette's blog for the last month or so and would LOVE a spot in her class. Pretty please pick me!

I have actually started thinking about the holidays--which for use start with a vengence next Monday with one of 5 October birthdays in my family!!

I love BPS classes and I'm sure this one will be terrific.

Lisa S. in Texas

As I knew I would, I'm having so much fun with this whole process! Thanks so much for letting us joing along, Ali.

Tina J.

I have to plan early with all the handmade gifts prepare from baked goods for the neighbors, family calendars for both sides, greeting cards for my grandmother. I've started working on the calendars scrapping the monthly toppers and customized b-days & anniversaries. My family comes in every year from out of the country so we have an extra long celebration through the New Year.

This year on my hubby's side, we are making all homemade gifts, mamas, kids and dads included. We did this 6 yrs ago and it was so much nicer to see the gifts that came from their own hearts and hands. I have a few of those completed. Trying to get it all done early though, so I can decorate at Thanksgiving time and sit back and relax and enjoy it all.

Yup, have a few gifts bought already - not usually this far ahead, but kinda like it. I am off on maternity leave (I return to work in middle of November) so have more time now than I will then with a one year old around.

I have started planning for the holidays, have a few gifts stashed away and plans to make some as well!

I'm starting my Christmas cards at a workshop on Saturday. Earliest I've ever been off the mark. But I did see Advent calendars at Target three weeks ago, so clearly I'll have to schedule it for August next year if I'm to get ahead of the game.

ali, i just love your photos from yesterday! I've been doing pretty good at keeping up myself, and trying to keep things posted on my blog (holding me accountable). The large photo of Chris and Simon, above his computer...I love it! What a cool idea!

This is my favorite time of year. I had great plans to have both of our families up for Thanksgiving this year. I think we will be moving now though, and we are not sure when, so plans are on hold...maybe next year! But, I just love decorating for fall, and the smells in the air...my favorite time of the year!

i haven't started planning yet. . .but i noticed that as of tomorrow there are only 12 weeks. . .thanks to simplemom.com for the alert!

Hillary

I have actually started my Christmas list of gifts to buy and have purchased about one third of them. I don't really do mnuch for Halloween - buy the candy last minute so it won't get eaten here! I have made 18 jars of jalepeno jelly for teacher gifts and have 12 more jars ready to go. Thanks for blogging and keep creating! CindyML

My immediate family started a new tradition (even though it is only one year old) of giving each other handmade gifts. I haven't started but now that summer is over and fall is here I think I better get started.

I started making Christmas cards in July! Now, I'm only half-finished, but at least I have the ideas down and started, along with ideas for all the handmade gifts I plan on doing. This weekend will start the great holiday blitz!

I would love some help to get through the holidays this year!!!

I have been planning so far, thanks to this blog. http://www.100daystochristmas.com/
I'm pretty much up to date with their plan.

I had fun last night trying to remember to take pictures. This morning so far too.

I have Halloween costumes and party goodies. That's it so far! Got a B'day party to plan before I can move on to the next big thing!

Really been thinking about the holidays, gathering that christmas feel in my heart as the days get shorter and the morning and evenings cooler. I had the opportunity to experience Kolette and her husband at Creative Escape ... very inspiring!

About 8 years ago we started the tradition, in my husband's family, to exchange handmade gifts for Christmas. There are 7 brothers/sisters in his family and we have so much fun on Christmas day presenting and receiving these wonderful creations. There have been so many different types of presents. Examples include homemade food items like jam, cookies or mustard, some gifts made out of cloth such as small table quilts, aprons or penny rug coasters and some paper crafts like homemade cards and books. Handmade gifts are just the best! My husband and I have not yet decided what we will be making this year.

ohmygoodness! So many have started, and finished! Christmas planning, shopping and all. wow! I used to - and just haven't the last few years. Although - i found I saved more money cuz I wasn't shopping the great discounts, however. I really want to do the album like you did last year Ali - SO cute! and a great keepsake of the daily things in December. I'm enjoying watching this week's project - and I will do it - though not this week. I sent the camera with my daughter on her school trip to Outdoor Education for the week. I would LOVE to do the Giving Well class. Kolette is so darn talented!

I have learned from experience that if I don't start the Christmas cards early, they will become a stress factor. And as I really enjoy making the cards (if I'm not stressed out, that is) I have already started planning them this year. That way it is a treat thinking about them instead of something on the list of things I HAVE to do. :)

Hi Ali! I have several ideas about the holidays but I have not actually done anything about them yet. I would love to be able to take this class! Maybe it will get my butt in gear and get going...

I have always loved the holiday season, but I am especially looking forward to this year because our first child will be just shy of his 1st birthday this Christmas. The thing that I enjoy the most about the holidays is taking the time to buy that special gift for everyone-I am NOT a gift card giver! That being said, I usually wait to late to get started to "make" gifts. I usually don't even think about gifts till after Thanksgiving! So, I think this workshop just might be the kick start that I need to really do something special this year.

I haven't even started thinking about the hoidays yet! We are always on a budget and don't give out a lot of gifts. I think making handmade gifts would be even more thoughtful.

I have to give myself a pat on the back... I've already started making my Christmas cards and I officially bought my sons their first Christmas gifts yesterday!!

Xmas time is always kind of sad for us, because we are far away from family, but this year, I guess will be different, as we are pregnant and It will be a start of a new year for us.

What a great class! Sounds wonderful! I have already started picking up a few things for my kids. I would love to make goodies for all the special people in my life but not really sure what! This would be a great tool! Thanks, Ali! And...I'm having a blast documenting our life this week! It really makes you enjoy the moment and not rush through the day.

I loved Kolette's workshop last year and would love to take this one. I have started shopping for my daughter's gifts. I am working on some Christmas cards. I have a couple of projects that I want to make as gifts. Now just finding the time to get them done. LOL Thanks for the chance!!!

Thanksgiving is the big holiday here and I've already started inviting people and planning how to move the talbe saroudn to get everyone in the same room - a requirement. I refuse to have the 'kids in teh kitchen' so to speak, so we move our furniture out of the dining room into our 'great room' and vice versa, then add 2 more long tables and the 20-30 of us eat together. Anxiously awaiting the new Bon Appetit to come out so I can start planning my menu with my parents. Kids are already talking about what they are thankful for.

PLUS this year, we celebrate our 15th (yes15) anniversary on Thanksgiving. WOW! It truly does not seem like its been 15 years.

We start the day with a big breakfast out and a trip to Big Lots (only store open!) then come home to get ready.

I can't wait!

I have absolutely not starting planning yet so this class sounds perfect for me! Every year I strive to do handmade gifts but never get my act together in time. I need help! :)

I have started to get ideas for handmade cards and gifts. My DD started her Christmas list to Santa, so far she wants everything in the American Girl catalog.

I would so love to win a spot in this class! I have had the email printed out about it for a week now...reading and re-reading and trying to decide. I have started my lists for christmas, I love my Christmas lists! I look forward to getting out my lists from the prior years, see what to tweak and change and what I learned from that year. Just told my best friend last night that I want to try and make as many gifts as I can this year!
PS I am loving the picture taking this week for your week long project, my kids are loving it too! Thanks for the inspiration!

I have to get October done with first - hubby's big birthday (40) this week, Thanksgiving next weekend, then my birthday later this month...basically once Scorpio is out then I can think about the holdiays!

I actually have decided what homemade gifts I'm making this year, both with SB supplies & baked goods. I picked up a few things at my LSS the other day and am making the yearly list of the people "not to forget" outside of the family: school bus driver, teachers, doctors offices, therapists, etc. Last night while crawling into bed I was thinking how every year I wish I'd done my Christmas decorating earlier so that we could enjoy it longer. 'Think that the day after Halloween would be pushing it? ;-> I mean, the Christmas decorations are out IN FULL FORCE, *WITH TREES* at Lowes, so how could it be too soon for ME to decorate and get my family into the spirit of the Season??
Blessings, Ali.

I started planning a few days ago and with the exception of the grandchildren, all gifts this year will involve photos in some way and I'm not just putting photos in frames, I've come up with several projects and picking just the right one for each member of our family. With our economy in it's current state, I think it's a good time to think about handmade gifts.

Yikes am I behind already! ;)
Thanks for the chance.

I'm ready to make our Christmas cards with a photo from last year (SOOOO much easier than trying to take a new one). I've decided on a few presents (which reminds me I need to start knitting that blanket) and am hunting for homemade present ideas for others :)

I would LOVE a spot in Kolette's class!

We usually start thinking and planning for Christmas in September . . . but not actually doing anything until November. Always great intentions . . . We're fairly set on what we're getting the girls . . . and I have cards already planned out! I'm getting there.

This year I plan to use those photos I take throughout the year and have stored digitally!

Recently, I used all my photos from my sons travel baseball season (March-July) and made a photoshop slideshow/movie for the team. I gave each child a dvd which I burned for them. The parents were overwhelmed with this keepsake. With almost 600 pictures, set to music with great transitions etc we will all remember this special season of memories.

I plan on making a YEAR IN REVIEW movie/slideshow for each set of grandparents. All those photos I take will once again be put to use in this project.I plan on selecting their favorite music to add in to the phots/quotes etc. I know they will love watching their grandchildren! I love that my photos will get some use other than my scrapbooks.

I have the desire to create my own cards and find or make unique gifts, but that's about it! Pick me. Pick me. I could use some inspiration.

Your pictures are great! I have managed to take just a few each day! Thanks for sharing!

Ali, your photos are gorgeous, as always! I love your knife rack, btw! LOL! I have begun to think about what I want to make for holiday gifts. I plan on making almost everything, but I am a last minute person, so I haven't started creating yet. They will be better this way...trust me. I would love to take Kollette's class! It would help me out so much!

Hi Ali~ I am totally in to the Week in the Life. I had so much fun with it yesterday at work and just when I thought I'd have nothing to photograph! Thanks for the guidance and inspiration!

I have also been doing handmade gifts every year and am running out of ideas so this class would be fantastic!

I have ideas fluttering around in my head but have not say down to plan it ":officially" I have some time set aside this weekend so we'll see what happens

I'm planning on making the holidays simpler this year. I'm going to put together a 31 days of photos album ahead of time so all I have to do is add the pictures throughout the month of December. It will be easier and I'll have more time to enjoy the holidays.

I've been thinking about it . . . Trying to think of great, meaningful gifts for this year. Began listening to Christmas music the first week of September. :-)

I guess you could say I've started thinking about christmas cards and a few projects that I want to make as gifts. But it hasn't gone beyond the thinking aspect yet:)

Bought some return address labels this summer for Christmas cards, does that count? haha. That's about it. Gonna make Christmas very simple this year. Every year I do photo calendars for grandparents, and kinda wanting to get a little more creative this year w/that effort.

I have definitely started! Only making my Christmas cards but it is so much fun! Soon I will think about the little thanks you favors for our Christmas Eve party! Can't wait!

Loving the idea of making the whole gift a work of art, including wrapping and tag. Sometimes, it seems like the whole experience of the holidays is a whirlwind of going through a lot of motions, but I think it's important to infuse it with sacredness.

Sounds like this class would be a good way to start in that direction.

Melissa L.

i have started organizing supplies for tag/card making and gift wraps and i've started looking through catalogs but haven't started buying any gifts yet! i love the photos you posted.

I have not started planning for the holiday season yet...I know I need to start soon, but I have just been putting it off.

Afraid so, got friends coming to stay from New Zealand for Christmas and New Year so planning for their visit.

PS - Ali our company is coming from Philadelphia - we are in Calgary, AB, CAnada - we are excited to have a houseful. Have been busy making quilts, bags and some photobooks for gifts. Probably only about 1/2 there .
Nicky

Planning to make the holidays a lot more simpler than years in the past. Homemade gifts...is a good place to start: one of the stocking gifts I'm thinking of making is a CD of all of our favorite Christmas songs!...still brainstorming....

I have a friend that buys all of her Christmas gifts at garage sales, or thrift shops. She shops all year for them. This year I already have a pile of used books, a puzzle and a few other items. I'm going to try to find things for my family that are gently used. My mom and dad and my brothers and sisters exchange handmade gifts we've made for each other. Last year we exchanged homemade marshmallows, tie die matching socks and underwear, newly oiled and painted garden tools (that mysteriously went missing from our shed a few weeks before Christmas) and other thoughtful, homemade items. It's so much fun. The kids gave and got only homemade stuff. There was no complaining or whining. And they were actually more excited to give the gift they'd made than to get anything.

I'm really enjoying this project. Thanks for the inspiration.

I have recently started planning for the holidays, but find myself wanting to do something different than the normal buying spree for many. I feel like we have so much and want to give more than just a thoughtful or expensive gift. This seems like the perfect solution for the thoughts I have been rolling around. Thanks for sharing all with us.

Holly

Nope, I've done nothing yet! It'll be here before I know it though so I should get a move on huh? My twin girls are 5 and this year I think they will be telling me what they want for Christmas instead of me picking for them.

Other than ordering the Basic Grey "Wassail" card kit, I haven't done anything. I would love to be ableto take Kollette's class - I love to be inspired! Thanks for the chance!!

I'd love to be able to make my own gifts for Christmas! I've been baking for my friends for the last few year and would love to have new ideas and inspiration. Thanks Ali!

Hi Ali!
Would LOVE a spot on the Giving Well class. Have not started preparing for the holidays, but have been thinking a lot about it! Love your challange for this week (and Stacy's too!)
Kathy

I am so loving the opportunity to watch your process as you complete the week-in-the-life project. I am truly inspired. Kollette's workshop looks great...thanks for the chance to win it!

I just stumbled onto your site from Soulemama...what a wonderful blog! I look forward to reading your archives sometime soon.

I have started to plan for the holiday season, making bean bags for friends' kids and hopefully making Soulemama's gratitude wrap with homemade cards for some friends. I would love this class as an opportunity to discover more wonderful ideas! Thank you!

Hi Ali,
I started thinking more about the holidays a few weeks ago. I tried to get a head start on our annual Christmas letter. I've been looking at catalogs for cute decor. This is our first Christmas in our home together. So parents & grandparents have already said Christmas is at our house! Eeep!

I was actullay just thinking about holiday gifts last night. With the way the economy is going I pledged to make as many home-made gifts this year to help save some money. It might not help the economy but it will help my budget. As far as plans I'm not there yet still thinking.

The only thing I have done is start brainstorming gifts. :)

The only plans I've made so far is to keep things simple!

Just found you through shutter sisters yesterday. I'm a scrapbooker wanna be, I get too focused on the photography, and then the scrapbooking takes me way too long! I think I've make 2 digital pages in my life, and just a couple more traditional scrapbooks (oh, one though shutterfly, fun). Looking forward to following your blog though for inspiration. And no, haven't thought about the holidays yet, just trying to appreciate each moment for what it is :)

October and November are jam packed with work, workshops and traveling. Not really thinking about the holidays yet... This year could be scary. I think it will be the first time that both my children are working and that we cannot be together. Don't want to think about that now -

This would be WONDERFUL! I have taken the homemade pledge this year, and while I have some solid ideas started, I would love a little guidance from those who have done this before!

Hi Ali.I am in the process of making my own gifts for Christmas , trying to at least.A quilt for my mom, stuffies fo the kids(the cutest patterns!!) and a quilt for my husband....that is the plan...Let's see if I get it done.I will have to buy a few gifts but I am doing my best this year not to buy into overbuying and focus on the time we spend with family and friends which is the celebration for me.

The duplo is under the stairs in a box labeled "Miriam and Finnegan's Christmas Persent" so I don't forget, and buy something different! Thank goodness my kids don't read yet, and thank goodness for Ebay! I'd love more ideas though, especially for my very WONDERFUL mother-in-law (I know, can you believe it?)

No way have I started. I have 2 birthdays to plan in November, get through the fall and Halloween season too. Plus my hubby's bday and both sister's bday before Christmas. Such an overwhelming time of year but I love it. I just read on a blog that it's 12 weeks to Christmas tomorrow. I feel the pressure!

I'm in the gathering ideas stage. I've checked books out of the library and pulled out books for ideas. I've made a few gifts for my girls too. THanks for the chance to win

No real planning as of yet, but I do have 4 gifts bought. I also have an idea of some things I want to make. October is a pretty busy month. I would like to get through it and then start thinking of the Holidays.

I have not really started planning but am in the thinking stage. I am usually a last minute person, but this year would like to give a small album of the family thru the years (47), just picking a few hightlights each year.

off to check out the links for the giving well concept... i absolutely positively love the idea. thanks for offering a spot in the workshop!

I Love Christmas just as much as I love Fall....I'm deep this year in getting crafty. I am making a ton of these this http://www.makeandtakes.com/scrabble-tile-pendant-giveaway-winner. I'm using photos instead of paper. they are turning out adorable. I love making things to give instead of purchasing...saves us money too...and don't we need that this year.

Thanks for the contest - this sound like a great class! I bought some presents when we travelled abroad over the summer, and I've thought through a few gifts, but not too much prep yet. Really enjoying WITL!

I starting purchasing gifts last month in hopes to be done shopping by Halloween. Or at least mostly done by then. I find that if I spread it out I am not as stressed and it doesn't hurt the pocketbook as much. I bought Christmas cards already made this year, just have to take a family picture.

Have not stated planning. We move in 9 days to a different domicile, then I will begin in earnest. Promise. :)

Thanks for the giveaway! Yes, I have started 'planning', I decided that for Christmas I am going to make family recipe books for my mom and grandma and sister. I have the paper and stuff and am going to use my Bind-It-All. Fall decorations due to come out this week.

no plans yet, except for what I know happens every year: Christmas Eve at our house, Christmas Day at my parents. Our budget is very tigt this year (as I am sure is almost everyone's) so I am not sure what we will do for gifts.

I yard sale and shop bargains off season to get a start on Christmas presents. My son turns 16 in Dec. so I'm working on a scrapbook for him, but other than that, nada!

I'm ALways planning for the holdays, year round! We don't do (much) gift-giving with christmas but early december during the Dutch fest of Sinterklaas. It's my favorite holyday because i love having an excuse to get friends and family together, the combination of giving and receiving gifts, and it's a chance to reflect on the past year. I often choose gifts that have something to do with things that have happened the past year, like this year my husbands new hobby or a friend getting his bachelors degree as a doctor. Also with Sinterklaas it's a good custom to give handmade gifts or to make really cool gift wrapping (like for instance a cardstock horse for my horse-loving little sister to hide a little horse-themed present in) and to have the gifts accompanied by poems (preferably with some good humoured teasing in them ;-) ). We always have lots of fun and I'm always collecting gifts and ideas, and when autumn comes it's time to step it up and get crafting and bring everything together! I'm always welcoming new ideas to make the gifts and the giftgiving even more fun!

Hi Ali! I love your pics and that you all have "family lightsaber battles" we do that too, I need to take pictures next time!
I've already started planning the things I will make this year - I am really trying to do MOSTLY homemade gifts for family and friends so I have a busy few months ahead of me! And I've even starting buying a few things as well for my kids and baby sis. We are on a strict budget with my husband being a teacher (and our only source of income) so we try to do a lil bit each month!

I've done a little Holiday planning. I've even started making Christmas cards. As for gifts, well, the grown-ups always get handmade items. . .and I have kinda picked something. Problem is, I need to learn to sew -real quick. : )

That cake looks YUMMY! Do you think you could post the recipe?

I have NOT started even THINKING about Christmas yet! I was just looking at this class this morning, and was debating taking it. I would love to get a jump start on my gift giving! Thanks for the chance to win!

Almost done with our shopping. We will be in Disney from the 14th to 24th of December so I need to have everything done before we go.

I'm having fun with the week in the life project Ali! I'm doing my pages (digitally) as I go along, that way I make sure they get done. I posted them on my blog: http://hoofprintsdesign.blogspot.com

As for Christmas, yes I've started planning. I've already bought a couple of gifts, have lists going and I hope to complete a hybrid project that will go to several families we know in the next month. This is going to be the year I can enjoy December, rather than stress over it! :-)

I have not at all started planning fo the holidays. I think I am deep in denial that it is actually October already.

Love to see the pictures you post from Oregon. I grew up just south of Roseburg and my grandparents (both sets) lived in Cottage Grove/Creswell all my childhood and my grandfather is still in Cottage Grove. Your blog is like a mini-visit home every day.

Good luck with the little one. You will love the differences between boys and girls. I have one of each and love the differences.

That class sounds interesting. The only plans I have will involve homemade cards. I need to plan my own timeline on getting it all done. I need to think of other gifts, especially for those that ar at a distance. Thanks

Oh! My yes I have started thinking holiday gifts for those extended family members and teachers/school aides. I really am thinking handmade gifts this year so I have been coming up with ideas that I want to make and have started collecting supplies in an effort to get these things made early. Wish me luck!

Thanks!

I am always such a last minute shopper. Every year, after Christmas, I tell myself that I am going to do better the next year. I never do. I could use some good ideas for this year, and to be able to do something crafty while making Christmas gifts would really be awesome.

I'm in the planning stages for Christmas, and have a calendar to fill with dates so that the Holiday season doesn't get away with us! We have lists going, a date to have photos taken for our Christmas card, and always have ideas about the decorations. I really want to be more deliberate about how we celebrate. More about the spirit, less about the gifts. Would love the inspiration of the class!

My plans this year are to make the Holidays more simple, more enjoyable, and for me to be more present in the moment.

I have to admit that while in Hobby Lobby at least 3-4 weeks ago and saw all the holiday goodies out, I picked up several projects, including all the makings for my christmas cards. So excited, but felt a little guilty. You know, sometimes I feel sorry for Halloween and Thanksgiving. I don't want them to feel left out, neglected, skipped over. Must show them some special love, too!

...I purchased a stamp set to make a few gifts and one stocking stuffer (it was a really good July sale + coupon!). And since we're traveling to see family this year, I'm preparing for the trip....not a whole lot!

my comment got added into a different person's post.

I am trying to do an album for the family of 47 years, by picking a few highlights in each year. This may not be done by this Christmas, so am making a gift for each family member, which is something I try to do each year.

I have been planning for Christmas almost since last Christmas. For gifts this year, I am making them (bird nesting balls for most of our friends) or giving books purchased at the Friends of the Library used book store. I will not purchase any new decorations but have already started making button trees and a wall quilt in this year's colors. I have collected lots of decorations over the years at garage sales and thrift stores so I usually pick a theme each year so when I get the decorations out and organize them within the theme, things look new and unique.

We are scaling back this year so I've started my "people to buy for" list and after Columbus Day will start the actual buying. I do alot of theme type gifts so am always buying little things thru the year to put in a gift basket.

What an awesome giveaway! I am so committed this year to "giving handmade". My mom has always given each of us at least one handmade gift every year - and those are the things I cherish! I am just beginning to think about the holiday's and gift giving. I am eager to begin planning our family holiday cards.

I have started to plan my Christmas cards and my Christmas Eve dinner party plans.

Looks so cool. My life is so busy right now that it would be nice to settle down and have something planned for me :)

I've picked up a few things. My favorites so far are the Little Miss Matched (thanks, again, to Stacy Julian!) socks and receiving blanket I got for my 2 week old niece. I can't wait to see those adorable little miss-matched socks on her tiny feet!! ACK! The Cuteness!!!

I've started thinking about how I can give meaningful, thoughtful gifts. Given the current state of our economy, I'm trying to think of ways to give with purpose (instead of just heading over to the mall and overspending). This class would definitely assist me in pursuing that goal this holiday season. Thanks for the opportunity.

Well, I've started planning in my head, lol. I do have a few presents stock piled, so that is a load off. Taking a class would certainly prompt me!

Nope, haven't started planning yet .... I need to get working on that!

ummm... i thought the other day that i should probably start planning for the holidays. they always seem to sneak up on me!

First of all, Ali, thanks so much for doing this week in the life. I'm loving it!

And, I have bought a couple stocking stuffers, and have got a budget worked out. Hoping to get plans for a Christmas cards done soon.

i love the picture in the car. it's my fav so far.

and yes, ive started to think of the holidays. i haven't actually DONE anything yet, though. i get really anxious about gift-giving. it's something so close to my heart that i never want it to be anything less than really super special. so mostly i just worry a lot and wait until december finally rolls up and spend three weeks not sleeping. i cook, i bake, i paint, i create. it's insanity, really.

but i love it. and wouldn't trade it for the WORLD!

(though i also wouldnt really mind some cool ideas to get me started early for once. after all its the giving i love, not the sleepless nights!)

The only thing I have started thinking about is what to do for our pre-Thanksgiving ritual. Family from out of town comes the weekend before and we sit around and eat and talk and eat and talk all day. Once a year everyone comes over to our house. One year we did full on turkey dinner, last year we got catered Hawaiian BBQ. Not sure yet about this year!

Have started planning holiday gifts, but always need ideas. Also love the hand made gifts best. I would so very much love to win this class - fingers crossed!!

My mother-in-law just asked for our xmas lists yesterday!!! I can't believe it's already that time of year. I'd really love to have a "homemade" christmas this year. Haven't started, but trying to figure out some ideas!

I have started on a "sisters" scrapbook for my mother for Christmas. I am also looking at completing some tag books for my neices.

Have I started planning for the holiday season yet??? Are you kidding!!!! I actually started right after the LAST holiday season. I'm a trademark paralegal (and grandmom of 2-1/2 year old twins!), and my life is nothing but due dates and planning ahead. Would absolutely LOVE to take this class!!! p.s. - can't believe how Simon has grown and how handsome he is!!!!

love your photos!!
I have done some shopping and I got the motovation from you to do a christmas album before Christmas, DONE it!! All I have to do is add photos after christmas, love this idea as this always seems like such a big chore to me after christmas, so thank - you ..

What a great giveaway! I am just beginning to think about gift and project ideas for the holidays. I am committed to "handmade giving" this year. I am really eager to get started on our families holiday cards!

No planning yet, but I'm always determined to do a little better than last year. I really want to be organized this year so I'm not so stressed and can enjoy the reason for the season!!

following this for sure! love the idea of documenting it all. it's easy to forget.

i don't allow myself to start thinking about the holidays until today (Oct. 1st)...halloween kicks it off for us. i hope to make more crafty homey type gifts for presents this year.

I haven't really started planning for the holidays yet, but I did buy a Christmas gift for a friend a few weeks ago. I guess that counts as planning. Right?

I admit I have not even taken out the Halloween decorations yet! Horrors! I've got all sorts of ideas in my head, but I'm so determined to be ahead of the game this year, last year I was so unorganized that it took away from the real spirit of the season for me
