Week In The Life : Wednesday Photos + Words

10.01.08
- Simon was up before the alarm today. When I got up I found him on the
couch cuddled up under a blanket where he had gone back to sleep after
not being able to locate the Darth Vader mask.
- Bagel. OJ. Clothes on. Wait for bus. Off to school.
- Working on financial spreadsheet. Working on establishing a budget.
- Chris checking out Facebook.
- Emails.
- Shower.
- Chris tells me “I like it when you are funny.”
- We head out for coffee and to my OB appointment.
Starbucks: decaf pumpkin spice for me, cinnamon dolce for Chris.
- Wait 45 mins for doctor ☺.
- All good at the appointment. Measuring a bit big which she said was a
good thing. Lots of political banter (love that about her). Will be
going to OHSU for second level II appointment on Friday.
- I love that Chris comes to the appointments with me. I love having a bit of time with him to grab a coffee.
- Planning to cook homemade chicken noodle soup tonight.
- Work on Designer Digitals releases for this weekend.
- Simon home at 1:45pm (every Wednesday). A high five to Chris as he leans out the window from the living room.
- In the house. “Stayed in green.” And into the Darth costume.
- “I am the best Darth in the whole world.” According to Simon.
- On comes Empire Strikes Back.
- Nap time for me on the couch.
- Chris goes to a meeting. I cook dinner (did the homemade chicken noodle soup and it was great). Simon does his homework. Fix Simon’s dinner.
- Chris comes home + we head to the indoor swimming pool. A Wednesday night tradition.
- We leave there with Simon in his PJ’s. Home. Brush teeth. Read book. Prayer.
- Work a bit more.
So how's it going? Are you still playing along?
I know it is a challenge to keep going. I find that by this evening I have found my rhythm. I am not capturing everything, but it is enough to tell a pretty complete story about our lives right now. I am not obsessing about the photos or the words or the stuff (I barely have any this time around)...just letting it become a part of my day without overtaking my day.
In the comments section of the last post Dena asked about stuff. So far I have very few things: a couple receipts, a copy of the paper, grocery list, a few things Simon has brought home from school. It's not a big deal if you don't have a ton of stuff - in the end we will just be working with whatever we have collected.
Make sure you are getting yourself in some of your photos. Use your self-timer or have someone in your family take some shots of you. You are a major part of this story.
Hope you are enjoying this journey.

Still clicking away. It felt weird at first, but it is getting easier to get pics of me doing stuff. I think revisiting this idea every now & then is a good thing!

Hi Ali,
Yep, I am still following along but feeling kind of overwhelmed...arrghh...I haven't stressed much about it, still feel somewhat overwhelmed by it for some reason. That said, after looking back on the photos of this week so far I am grateful I have them and will be making an album with them b/c they truly do capture a moment in time and a "slice of life" so to speak. I have to say again...I just love your photographs. They are so "real" and there is a certain quality in them that I just love! Thanks for this project and letting us follow along on your week!

I am stillg oing strong. I am actually finding the more days I get into it the more pics I take.
I am not the best photographer, but it's going good.

Hi Ali,
Thanx for the constant inspiration. Love checking your blog regularly. Still chugging along...with the pics and the words. I'm actually enjoying the process, find it kinda relaxing. Everyone around me, especially my boys are asking why I keep taking these "odd" pictures of random things....by day 3, they're use to it now, even the parents and teachers at their school...they all know me as the lady with the camera. I'm finding this "assignment" as a really eye opener of how all the "little things" in our daily routines make it a one great big, fantastic, opportunity to capture our life.
I'm also learning new things about my camera too...like how to use the timer...loving it! Thanks Ali!

Oh. My Goodness. Your OB's office looks very familiar. Is that office across from Sacred Heart? Clinic for Women?
Oh those anxious days of doing nothing but preparing, growing and waiting.
I am going to try and get my lists and pic's up on my blog tonight.
You are an inspiration!

So I have found the fact that I can't leave the house and I'm not able to do "more" a bit challenging. Literally every photo looks the same every day, so I'm changing the challenge to fit my life and grouping the photos into categories instead of days (Food, life, disability, connections and, of course, the dog). It's totally giving me a new perspective on things to photograph and how to look at aspects of my surroundings. It's been really interesting.

Ali,
I am just adoring this project. I love your style and your photos. I am having fun trying to think of new ways to capture to little things so that I don't have the same photos over and over each day. It's amazing how fleeting life is, and I am so grateful that I'll have a documentation of this time in my life, with my husband and my 11 month old daughter. I also think I'm going to use some of these pics to do the project Stacey Julian suggested, The Present to Me. Thank you for the ongoing inspiration and encouragement. Wow! Love it!

I'm really not stressing about it too much. Trying to follow along. Tomorrow I fly out to my grandmother's funeral--so that will be interesting to have that part of my week.
I had to laugh at some of your photos from today. We had a messy bed this morning and I thought about capturing it, didn't--but wish I would have. And I had an OB appointment today as well--37 weeks!

I wish photos were as well composed as yours, but I have really stretched myself to think more about the composition of still life during this project... today I spent 5 minutes in the car trying to get a good shot of the CD (sticking out of the CD player so you can read the words) the kids like to listen to in the car.
I also had my son's swimming instructor take a picture of the two of us in the water (we are in a parent & child swim class) --- a little embarassing, but I am glad I have one :) I have had to do a little explaining about why I am walking around with a camera all the time and taking pictures of strange things like the gas pump, groceries and my daughters' cubby at school.
Since it seems like we have a never ending supply of paper flowing into my house, I seem to have quite a few things in my artifacts pile --- target flier, coke bottle wrapper, clothing tags, cereal box, to do lists, and lots of "projects" from my 3 year old. Not sure how they will all fit in, but excited to try.
Thanks for posting all of this, Ali --- I started working on recording "a week" last Thursday before I even saw your post. I knew I would need stuff for a CKC class and last Thursday was the last possible day I could put it off until and still get a week in... once I read your posts I felt like I had more direction for the project and was much more enthusiastic and serious about capturing life. I spent a while tonight printing photos and I am very excited to see how everything comes out!

This project has been so inspirational for me. I live by myself, so sometimes it seems a little ridiculous to record the nuances of my daily life. However, I am really liking how much attention to detail I am paying to my day. A year from now, will I remember that on October 1, 2008, Oregon was considered one of Obama's states? Will I remember that I wore a red skirt to work? LOL! It's the fun stuff. I also made a point to use my camera timer to capture myself while I work. Being a teacher it got a bit tricky, but looking at a few of the images I captured...it's so cool to see myself in action. I never usually have too much of a problem taking random pictures of myself...but I've never used the timer at work. That was fun, something I hope to repeat.
Thanks for the inspiration. :)

QUESTION: When it comes time to make the album I'll be missing pictures of my daughter's preschool, which we went to twice this weeks and both times I forgot the camera. If it was you would you "cheat" and take a picture say next week and insert it, or just leave it out all together? I suppose I could photograph the art she came home with...
BTW My kids love the camera around all the time. They keep yelling while I'm driving "Mum! Look! A fire truck! Take a picture! Quick!"
Posted by: Lady Scrapsalot | Wednesday, 01 October 2008 at 09:37 PM
Hi Ali,
Yep, and I am loving it. I feel like I've been handed a very important assignment and I am enjoying the "work" that goes into it. I am in a little bit of danger of burning out, simply because I have been taking so many pictures, and then staying up way too late to sort through them and blog about it. I'm going to try to be a bit more minimalist tomorrow.
I have to say that your OB visit pic really jumped out at me. What a familiar scene/feeling. I wish I had thought to capture that for myself at the time. Lord knows I've spent enough time in that exact pose on a similar table, waiting.
Glad everything is going well. :~)

I have only one camera, and it's a big one. I find myself not taking it out of the house, especially in the city where I might get mugged. It's just too cumbersome to take shopping when I'm balancing other bags, too obvious to have hanging around my neck on the street.
So I am focusing just on what my home is like this week. The garden full of veggies, a tree dripping with plums, laundry, kids playing in the play room, home-improvement projects half done, etc. I'm photographing mundane things I never considered important, and corners of rooms that are often out of focus in family candids.

I will be taking your "Week in the Life" class at CKC Seattle, and I'm so excited to have a bit of a headstart on some of my ideas. I jumped into your blog a bit late to start documenting this week (I'm so totally compulsive with correctness that I have to start on a Monday or I'd be fretting the whole time-not a good quality in a scrapper, oh well, I make it work), so I'm going to "see" how you and the other folks work out the kinks and then I'll jump in feet first on Monday! I'm probably most excited to help my very sweet, yet dilusional, hubby understand that teaching 5th graders all day isn't a job where I just sit down and give orders! :-) I can't wait to give my students the camera and see me through their eyes during the day. I'm going to save my lesson plans from the week for my "stuff". Do you think it would be weird to enlist my sitter in this endeavour? My little guy is 15 months, and while I am pretty up to speed with how his days go, it would be fun for me to see how he spends his days with her. Maybe a set of layouts where there is the mommy working day, daddy working day, and Oliver playing day all in the same format so you can "see" where we all are at the same time in a day? Fun, fun!
Posted by: Carrie | Wednesday, 01 October 2008 at 10:14 PM
OK-I just said I was a 5th grade teacher in the previous post, and then realized how horrid my grammar was! HA! And to think I get after my students for not proofreading...

I am still taking lots of photos and loving it!
Though i have been getting some strange looks sometimes at the photos i have bene taking when out. I have been taking at least 80 photos a day sometimes over 100. Have only collected some receipts from shopping over the past days, but have photographed the mail.
Can't wait for the weekend to get started organizing!

I am having so much fun. What a wonderful project. I didn't get quite as many pictures today as the last two, but enough I think. I am so excited to put the album together! I always have my camera with me and take random pictures often so that aspect at least is easy (I don't really notice the stares as I whip out my camera in Fred Meyer!).
Thanks for the inspiration and the gathering of like minds!

I am chugging along, today has been harder to write down stuff. I keep on taking pictures and need to go back and look at them. I am hoping the pictures will help me remind what I did not write down in words.
My husband is away so this week is not totally typical...but it does show how our lives are when he is away. I hope to get more pics of me when he returns.
Thanks for the challenge and sharing, Jess

I"m still going- I have my 12x12 pages DONE for Monday and Tuesday! I would love it if you could check out my blog! http://senovia1.blogspot.com/
This is so awesome! I love this project! Thanks SO MUCH for hosting and having all of us do this with you!

This is still fun so far!!LOL!! I like to blog it so then that way I'm writing my journaling at the same time. Maybe it would help some other's too!! I'm posting my pictures and then rethinking through my day and it happened and tyrping it right out. I'll be glad at the end so I can send my pictures off to shutterfly and start putting this all together.
That reminds me I do need to collect more stuff. I've been doing more facts, like grocery bill, weather and thought!!
Thanks Ali. This is a blast. BTW I finally got your book. Even though I was not 1-10 at CHA. I hosted Happy Hour at CKMB. Loving it!!
Posted by: Latrice | Wednesday, 01 October 2008 at 10:34 PM
Yes, still going. This is awesome! I urged my friends to join along and the funniest thing happened to one of them. Yeah, you!
You know who you are ( I'm sure she will be reading this)
She was at the store documenting and taking photos when a stranger came up and said "Hey, do you know Ali Edwards? Are you doing the project, too?" I'm sure there are hundreds of us documenting our lives this week. How awesome to be part of something so big and so personal. Thanks again for the encouragement and the motivation.

Still following along. But I have to say; It's hard to make decent (and interessting) pics when you work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. It brings me back on earth and realise that I don't want to do this (working 40 hours a week) for the rest of my life. I hope that within 5 years I can do this project again and be happy about the photo result...
Tanks!

It's harder then I thought but I am greatful to be doing it. I add in Stacy's project too.
Who knew our lives would be so intresting and different from day to day.

Still going. I'm a bit disappointed in my photos - it is soooo dark here in Finland this time of year that with my skills the photos are not what I'd like them to be. But I know the album will be interesting anyway, so I keep on taking the blurry & dark photos :-) Happy about a few successes as well. I still love the idea of this album and even before finishing this album I think I'll do another one later.

I'm still going strong :) I have to remind myself though that not this project is my week, but my week is this project! I am terribly good at procrastinating and fiddling around with my camera, forgetting what it actually was I was doing and documenting. Working on it though! I even had a few ideas how the album could come together, which I love, as this is my first scrapbooking project and I was a bit anxious to do it "right" before starting this. A perfect chance and a challenge, as well! It's not hard for me to take "enough" photos or collect "enough" stuff, but to keep focused on my day (setting priorities is my weak spot). So this is what I am trying to achieve!

Hi Ali,
I was wondering if you could post a copy of Simon's communication book or email it to me.
I am trying to improve communication with my daughters kindergarten teacher I think this would be perfect!
Congrats on your pregnancy, she is one lucky girl ;)

I'm still playing along, taking photos every day and I have also uploaded them every day + edited some to put on Flickr and in my blog. I don't write much each day, I just make a short list of what I've done and where I've been:)
Posted by: Nora | Thursday, 02 October 2008 at 03:31 AM
At the beginning of the week I've made lists of what to take pics of and they help me not to forget about things but mostly I'm just clicking as I go along. My husband is also taking more pics of me than normally because of this project. One of the pics I'm shooting daily is the view from our livingroom, it has a great big window and that view is one of the things we love most about living here. Sometimes we just sit and watch the clouds sail by for a little while. I always keep a journal (not the kind with feelings but about what we do, so it's easy to write journalling for our photoalbums and I don't have to worry about forgetting things when I'm behind on those), but now write more detailed than normally.
I'm going to scan the covers of the dvd's we watched/cd's we listened this week and try to find the logo's of the shops I've been to.
I'm thinking about making an album about how it is to live here, still in doubt to make this project a part of that, keep it seperate or make it part of the 2008 album.
I think most of my pics look horrible 'cause I don't have a lot of patience these past couple of days to really take time and compose a pic, and the lighting is often horrible (autumn has set in, it's really rainy and clouded and despite of the big windows it's so dark I have to turn the lights on during the day sometimes), but that's ok, these pics are snapshots of everyday life and I'm going to have small prints of most of them anyway.

Lady Scrapsalot: I know you asked Ali but I just wanted to give my input..hehe. I would totally cheat and take a photo later. Like right now I'm headnig to the gym but not bringing my camera, so I'm just going to use the photo I took of the gym when I walked past there yesterday:)

Hey Ali!! I started yesterday because I was already working on a monthly album for September. So I decided to document the first seven days of October this way.
I love that it's giving me more fun time with my camera instead of just nonstop shooting for work.

Still playing! I'm having a hard time remembering to write things down, though. And when I do finally remember, I feel like I have nothing to say. My routine is the same everyday. Oh, well.....

I started last Saturday and have been keeping up well. The challenge is making me take a fresh look at my life, why I do the things I do, and question whether or not I need to do some of the things I do. I am enjoying this very, very much!!
Posted by: René | Thursday, 02 October 2008 at 05:10 AM
Ali, Thanks for the inspiration to do this project. Besides the fun of capturing our lives right now, it's started some interesting conversations about WHY exactly I have a camera at the bus stop, etc. Also, I've had my camera to catch some precious moments not related to my family - like the two darling little girls laying on a blanket while their mom worked in our CSA gardens. Beautiful!
I do have a question. I love all of your little close ups of daily life. They make for neat compositions. I haven taken some of those, but I need tips on how to make the "big picture" photos (of an entire room or whatever) come out looking well-composed. Sometimes these seem to be the ugliest shots, but also the most interesting down the road. Thanks again for the inspiration! Carol

Ali -
This week has been amazing -- I find that I am so much more aware of my day and sometimes even the choices I make (hmm.. do I really want my kids to remember chicken nuggets for dinner or roast chicken -- not that I am making changes for the week, but I am thinking more about the choices we make all the time. Was so made at myself yesterday when we went for a walk on the perfect fall day and forgot the camera! Ugh! I love reviewing my day every evening and my parents who live far away love receiving my photo composites every night.

Having so much fun with this project. My camera has been everywhere..church, dentist, school, Target, mall, kitchen, trashcan, laundry... Thanks for the inspiration and your continued posts! It would be fun to do this the same time next year to see how my life has changed just in 1 year! Thanks again...Jenny, TN

I'm playing this week :). I've been using my remote to take pictures of myself or me and my friends together.
One thing this projects has taught me is to be more THERE. Does that make sense? Maybe more present is a better word. I'm enjoying the process very much.

Still here, Ali!! Yesterday got photos of our local Wal-Mart where I do most of my shopping, my Mom's 70th birthday and a few other things. I am becoming more aware of my daily life and my surroundings. Keeping up with the journaling, too. Today my husband and I leave for a mini break for our 16th anniversary!! Looking forward to those photos I take. Also can't wait to create this next week. AND I have several receipts from yesterday, too!!!

It is going better than I expected. As the week progresses I seem to get better, ecspecially after I figured out the self timer thing. Take a couple shots of each picture I want just in case I need to choose in the end. As for the question about "stuff" here are a few things I have been keeping, receipts, grocery list, city newsletter, cable bill that arrived on day 1, I printed out the weather report for Wednesday, a happy email from a friend, the packaging of my favorite tea, a candy wrapper of the candy I was snacking on durning my scrapping on Tuesday, the AC wrapper from teh album I bought for this project, a extra envelope from the bank stop I had on WEdnsday....just some of my stuff.

Hey Ali!
Love watching you through this process. I started out playing along on Monday - had several pictures going. But then my week took a very bad turn when I had a miscarriage. Which leads to my question. Do we only scrapbook the good things? Because sometimes in a normal average week - we just get this huge blow and it changes everything. I think that it is important to remember the good and the bad. LIFE. I think I am going to try next week to start this project over. Perhaps it will be a good way to count my blessings when I am feeling blue.

Hi Ali,
Thanks so much for doing this. When I first read about it, I thought, "Yeah, right. Like I have time for that." But reading your words and seeing your pictures made me realize how important this is. The little day to day doings/routines/activities are really what says this is who we are RIGHT NOW. So, I started yesterday and it has really made me become so much more aware and thankful for my family and my life. And it's fun not worrying about getting perfect shots. A blurry picture of a dog chasing 2 cats through my house with backpacks and books in the shot says it all. Thanks for the idea and encouragement!

Inspirational Ali, Can you share the recipe for the yummy looking pasta? It looks like a alfredo marinara mix?!?!
p.s. This week is the busiest week I have ever had in my career life so I haven't had any time to pick up my camera. I am starting this 7 day inspirational project on Sunday as my sister (My inspiration and best friend) runs her 1st marathon. Thanks for all your ideas. I can't tell you how much I enjoy taking two minutes each day to read your ideas. I even talk about you at work when we discuss inspiration. Good luck with your pregnancy. My baby is 7 months tomorrow!

Ali,
I have a question for you. On day 2 of this project I became very sick with a cough/cold and my routine has been different than it normally is. Another thing that happened is that my husband's car broke down and it made for some changes in our regular routine as well. My week so far doesn't look anything like a normal week would. Should that matter? I thought about postponing this project until I'm better so it can reflect our daily lives. Any thoughts on this?

I am LOVING this. I had no idea it would be so meaningful. And it's so weird to me that people (mostly family and friends) who've been reading my blog have been loving it too. I've been doing what you have and trying to post about each day.
I too hope to revisit this project in a few years again.

It's the first time I've done this. Still hanging in there. I sent the camera to the sitter today to get some pictures of my boy's day.

Still going... My kids are getting a bit tired of seeing me take pictures of the closets and the countertops though... :-)
Your daily posts are keeping me motivated. Thanks!!

Still playing. Making a photo-mosaic and blogging for each day of the week. I've had a lot of people ask why I have my camera with me. Some people don't "get it", but others think it is a great idea.
Giving my kids the camera as well--that way I might be able to get in a few photos too.

Hi Ali,
Thank you for all the inspiration! This is such a fun project and I really appreciate the simplicity of it.
I love looking at your pictures. You have a beautiful family!

Ali,
I'm still plugging away on this project and loving every minute of it. I have all of my pics uploaded for each day and am taking pictures everywhere - about 60 a day. I have mentioned this to several people at work and they think this is very cool. Still haven't figured out how I'll complete the project - digitally or actually in a scrapbook - that will be the next thing to think about. I'm not stressed at all about it and am including some pics of me, even tho I don't like those. It's making me very aware of my surroundings - I have taken a picture of the sky every day - it's been beautiful. Today I got a great shot as the sun was coming up over a cemetary near my house (while I was driving - don't tell anyone that part). I just stuck my camera out the window while looking ahead and snapped, not knowing what I'd get. No cars and the sun was perfect through the trees. I'm so enjoying this project and reading your blog every day, which I do anyway.
Thanks for the inspiration, as always.

Thanks so much Ali for your inspiration. By carrying my camera around today I caught what I want to call a Day of Firsts! This album will be fun !

Sigh. I realized last night that I've taken a ton of pictures and totally neglected to write ANYTHING down. Should I keep going? Help.

Really not stressing over anything that does or does not happen. I figure that's part of the experience. Like I had a Dr. appt yesterday and forgot to take any pictures because I was running late. It's life, I journal about it. Also, my daily journaling has slowed down, still haven't done yesterdays, as I was gone most of the day. I really appreciate your attitude, Ali. And it has made this experience so much more fun. :^)

Still going. AND loving all the blogs I am seeing from commenters. Nice to know my blog has company. =) Yesterday I didn't post pics b/c no energy. But "it's OK." *wink* Thanks everyone.

interested to see how others will be putting their info together.

Ali,
Thanks for the challenge. I am at a point where documenting an entire week would be a huge task. I have a 15 month old and a 2 month old and I cannot believe how quickly my days fly by. SO, i shortened the challenge a bit and did "a day in the life" and will do this for each of my kids and then hopefully one for ME!
Today, Oct 2, I posted on my blog my first "day in the life" if you'd like to take a look. I also used some digi elements from you and Designer Digitals.
Thanks for the great inspiration and I always enjoyyour insight!

I've been playing along. A dear friend of mine died on Monday, and when I found out on Tuesday, I wanted to quit. I only took one picture that day. But then the more I thought about it, the more I thought, you know, this is my life right now. For better or worse. And I want to complete this project. The finished result will just be different than what I had in mind. More of a journey through the process of grief this week. But it has given me something to focus on and something to help me stay afloat.
Thank you, Ali.

Ok, so I was so excited before, and starting and it's great. NOW, even MOOOREEE excited because I spent quite a while last night figuring out my lo and format for the album..and it is amazing. I can't wait to end day 7 because I can't wait to compile the album. Thank you SOO much!
Oh, and I don't have much stuff either...which is ok with me, I love all the pictures and the words more.

My week ends today. I've so enjoyed this. I used the idea to complete a promise to myself to be more consistent in journaling each month. September had been a miserable failure. I've just included my pix each day in my journal - wrote a little and September wasn't so skimpy after all! It was very fun and I plan to do a week again and do a full set of LO's to go with it.

I'm enjoying it. I'm being more aware I think of daily life. I don't have much stuff and don't think I will, but think that I might include some of the big news stories of the week as it is such a big week newswise. Am also surprised that people seem to be interested reading about it on my blog. I'd thought it would be more interesting looking back, but there seems to be some interest in the moment too which is neat.

I was going gung ho on this project when a family tradegy occured. I opted to restart the project next week. I really want this album to be about our orindary lives and I didn't want it sitting on our coffee table with a big horrible day documented in the middle of it. Not only that, but my focus has completely shifted this week anyway. Looking forward to regrouping and starting again on Sunday.

Working on it, but not as much as I'd hoped to. I completely forgot the camera today until this afternoon at soccer practice...where I found the batteries dead. Oh well. I just wanted to comment on the Darth Vader costume. My 6 1/2 year old is going to be Darth for Halloween. He's waited at least 2 years for it. He wears it all the time too. :)

Bad timing for me Ali as I prep for Paris next week. I have been more inspired to take random every day photos though. May do a page of my week instead of an album. Did do Stacy's challenge though.

Have a great weekend Ali!
