This is the third and final omnibus that I’m putting together, this one of the middle six episodes of Someday’s Dreamers: Summer Skies, which span from episodes 5 through 10, which is as far Kissfan has gotten in subbing the series, even though I believe the series has finished airing in Japan.

Episode 5
We delve a little deeper into the workings of magic in this episode as Sora successfully brings back an incinerated item from World War II, Kuroda and Asagi talk about learning magic from their parents in response to a question from Midorikawa asking how they learned magic, and Sora is asked to do an “awakening” spell on a woman in a vegetative state, but only revives her, but not her memories, causing Sora to get depressed and to realize that magic isn’t necessarily perfect.
I wonder if this is going to be the start of a rough stretch for Sora. She’s already had a couple of tough jobs, but she mostly blissfully got through them. She seems to have more doubts about herself now after her last job. Meanwhile, I wonder if Midorikawa will start trying to pay attention to how Sora does magic to try to learn from her from now on.

Episode 6
Sora is still depressed about not fully reviving the person from the previous episode. Midorikawa notices, but Sora pretends everything is fine. Then, Sora, Asagi, and Hiori decide to go out on the town since they only have a half day of classes. However, they meet a young girl in front of Sora’s house who says she wants a baby. Shocked, the girls ask why, but soon the girl runs off. Sora decides they have to look for her, which they do for most of the episode until Hiori realizes that the girl’s name is the same as a sweet shop they visited before and, sure enough, the girl is there when they go back. It turns out that one of her friends has gotten a baby sibling, but their playing together disturbs the baby, which has lead them to have a falling out. Sora helps her out by trying to give her suggestions of other ways to play. In the end, this seems to have gotten Sora back into a good mood, until she finds out that Kuroda is quitting being a mage trainee.
I’m not totally sure what the point of this episode was, really, other than maybe to establish the 3 girls’ friendship and to heal Sora’s depression over the events of the last episode. While the story in this episode were somewhat interesting, I’m not sure how they effect anything in the long term. The more immediate event is Kuroda wanting to quit, which I have a feeling stems from his uncomfortableness being in the class with Asagi, whom I’m pretty sure he likes, but just can’t confess to her about it.

Episode 7
OK, so the reason why Kuroda is quitting, or at least threatening to quit, isn’t all that clear. Kuroda asks Asagi if she’ll hang out with him after her go around with Sora and Hiori, and she does. Eventually, Kuroda gets around to starting to talk about how all of his magic customers are ungrateful and the like, and Asagi gets mad that that’s all he invited her out to talk about and storms off (even though Kuroda appears to have wanted to say more). The next day, Sora decides to go see Kuroda and convince him not to quit, but Asagi refuses to go. Unfortunately, Sora gets a cold, so Midorikawa and Hiori end up going alone. They try to convince Kuroda when Asagi decides to show up after all and verbally slaps Kuroda around trying to get him to come to his senses. In the end, we still don’t know what’s up with him, though.
I think one thing has been definitely established in this episode, though it’s been hinted at before, and another thing may also be hinted at. The first is that Hiori likes Midorikawa. I suspected it before, but I think it’s obvious now. That’s definitely going to be a source of conflict in the future between Hiori and Sora in the future I think. Second, I think Asagi likes Kuroda, but shows it in her own way, and kind of has this “I don’t like weak men” type thing so she’s disgusted with Kuroda for wanting to give up. In the end, I doubt he will, and I have a feeling that once this arc gets finished, we’ll go into some sort of final Hiori/Sora arc.

Episode 8
This episode, the class of trainees are called out to save about a hundred beached dolphins, which is a job too big for the regular dolphin rescuers to handle. They all head down and start doing their work. Asagi has issues trying to properly surround the dolphins with water before picking them up when someone surprising - Kurota - shows up to give her advice, and the two seem to make up. Meanwhile, Sora is finally able to get Midorikawa to use his magic to save some dolphins, and his magic looks pretty powerful now that we’ve seen it.
So we have one plot problem solved: Midorikawa can use magic now, and another one at least halfway solved: it looks like Kuroda is back. The only truly outstanding issue now might be the probably inevitable Hiori-Midorikawa-Sora triangle. We still have 5 episodes left, though, so I don’t know if we’ll see it yet, though.

Episode 9
Midorikawa takes Sora out on a date to the beach, and the two effectively start dating. Hiori calls Midorikawa while they’re out and finds out about their date and gets all depressed and pretends to call in order to set up a group meet up (instead of asking Midorikawa out on a date, like she was probably planning on doing). However, the next day, Midorikawa goes back to the house after a rain storm and spots Sora looking sick again and Hara doing…something to do (involving putting his head on her chest, apparently). I guess Midorikawa thinks something is up and wanders around town and says he doesn’t have a place to go back to.
So, we haven’t had any Sora/Hiori drama (maybe Hiori is too nice?) but now we have some Midorikawa drama, though not even knowing what Hara was doing, I think Midorikawa was already over reacting. Sora looked sick and/or tired again. My guess is that he was trying to do something to help her but noooooooo. Midorikawa assumes the worst right off the bat. I guess we know what the next episode will deal with, then.

Episode 10
This episode takes a rather serious turn as, when Midorikawa finally gets around to confronting Hara, he and Saori tell Midorikawa that Sora is dying due to a hereditary mage disease which causes the inflicted to have an accelerated heartbeat triggered by loud sounds or bright lights, and Sora had an episode due to the storm the previous night and hadn’t recovered. What’s worse is that those afflicted seem to die about a year after the first episode, and it’s been about a year since then for Sora. Unfortunately, Sora has run away from the hospital, so Midorikawa goes out searching for her. After searching all over towm, he finally catches up to her and finally gets Sora to admit how scared she is.
Well, if I had to guess, Midorikawa is probably going to save the day somehow with his magic. Maybe his magic has a way of curing the illness. Who knows. Also, just as I figured, Hara was just trying to help Sora out and Midorikawa was being a moron jumping to conclusions, and Hara told him as much. In any case, I think we know the story arc for the final two episodes now.

Overall looking at this, this series has largely just plodded along through these 6 episodes. The series hasn’t really been bad, but there isn’t much there to necessarily make it all that exciting either. Also, the character animation seems to have gone down hill. Now that I’m over the nice backgrounds, the lowsy animation is really starting to stand out.
